I don't see why it's such a big deal (is it?). Suddenly when it comes to land, countries all tend to retreat to their nationalistic shell. But I could be wrong. Could the North Pole not get a special status in favor of the Native People living there, whether it is the northern part of Canada or Danish-occupied Greenland?

I'd like to see them turn the whole area into a protected zone, actually. Traditional hunting and fishing by indigenous peoples. Maybe a highly controlled tourist industry, definitely access for scientists. No weapons, no industry. No nuclear subs, no commercial shipping, no commercial fishing.

Why we have to destroy things to turn a quick buck is beyond me.

Hey! Martin Le Acadien

You write very well. I had a real good laugh with your comments

Hi! Pycrete

I completely agree with your ideas.

Land is only considered yours if you occupy it. Yuh gotta have citizens "on the ground" in order to claim it.

I worked in the North in Yellowknife and had contracts in Inuvik and Frobisher Bay during 71-73.
Everything is such an adventure up there. The sense of community is just great. Nobody passes you on the road up there without asking if you need help.

Gee, let's give up the Far North to any one but those terrible Yanks, let Russia, Denmark and Iceland go to war over it and then we will bash the Yanks for no reason!

Russia vs. Denmark vs. Iceland.. wow that would sure be entertaining! I'd sure love to see that lol.

Oh and the "yanks", I bash em' on a daily basis. It wouldn't be of any change in my life.
And anyways, they don't deserve the north. They already got Alaska, so they don't get the Far North. They just don't.

By the way, does Iceland even have an army? Or a militia for that case? I'd be surprised if they did.

Blair - It would be nice to turn the north into a pristine wilderness where the native peoples can live as they always have. Unfortunately, as the ice melts, the north west passage is going to become a reality year round.... everyone will want to use it. Plus a great deal of Russian territory is in the north and they probably wouldn't want to give it up. I say that we protect what we have or we loose it. Its that simple, the global community may seem to be our pals (and they mostly are) however when (and if) the hammer comes down its still every man for themselves. Countries look out for their own interests first. Canada has the opportunity to benefit from climate change here or we could simply be left behind because we are not dealing with the problem as we should. If people from other countries want to use our land sea and air it should be under our watchful eye. Not that i don't trust the Danes or the US or Russia... but i don't b/c i didn't vote for their national leaders (well i didn't vote for ours... but thats a different story)

As an area protected by the UN, the traffic and industry allowed would be limited by the conditions of the treaty, Pycrete. There is little benefit to Canada in developing the north in the ways that are suggested by the current craze for destroying everything to make a quick buck.

The most-often mentioned benefit of northern Canada melting is that we can get at the oil. We got into this mess by burning oil in the first place. It's like a junkie trying to cure his addiction by searching out a new dealer.

As for what Russia does with their porton of the arctic....Whether they decide to do the right thing or not should have no bearing on us making a decision to do the right thing. Us making the right decision can serve to put at least some pressure on them to do the same though.

Maybe CNN will design an emblem for the Hans Island War. Does Iceland have an Army, well they got lots of NATO bases on the Island and most Air Force Guys have Icelandic Wives! Any island that is warmed by geothermal springs and has hot water piped all over with Sauna being the national sport and hot tubs in every home, you gotta do better than hockey for an attraction. Most people there are very laid back. (One of my dad's cousins married a gal from Iceland, stopped over a visit, got an eyefull 8O )

Very small defence force, no enemies in sight but they got a Navy to protect their Fishing Fleet, they almost start a fishing war with Ireland every spring over the North atlantic Fishing area!
