Sir Humphrey: "Hello Bernard, I hear the Prime Minister wants to see me?"
Bernard Woolley: "Yes, Sir Humphrey."
S H: "What's his problem?"
B W: "Education."
S H: "Well, it's a bit late to do anything about that now."

The classic/standard four stage response:

Sir Richard: "Standard Foreign Office response in a time of crisis. In Stage One we say that nothing is going to happen."
Sir Humphrey: "Stage Two, we say something may be going to happen but we should do nothing about it."
S R: "Stage Three, we say that maybe we should do something about it, but there's nothing we can do."
S H: "Stage Four, we say maybe there is something we could have done, but it's too late now."

So long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men" : Voltaire.

In the country of the blind the one-eyed man is king: Erasmus c.1469 - 1536

Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism - how passionately I hate them!: Albert Einstein

=
Do not... regard the critics as questionable patriots. What were Washington and Jefferson and Adams but profound critics of the colonial status quo?: Adlai Stevenson

something a little different..

"We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life's morning; for what in the morning was true will in evening become a lie."

-- C.G. Jung

Life continually evolves. We’re always moving into new experiences, new possibilities. This constant change unsettles the personality, which finds security in stability. But with life always in flux, that security is an illusion. We experience pain by trying to hold on to things that are not solid.

Life becomes joyful when we can open to the constant flow and ride freely with it. This requires us to let go of the need to control. We need to learn to trust.

"Can it then be that what we call the ‘self’ is fluid and elastic? It evolves, strikes a different balance with every new breath."

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy: that is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness." : John Kenneth Galbraith

=
The strongest passions and most dangerous weaknesses of the human breast; ambition, avarice, vanity, the honorable or venal love of fame, are all in conspiracy against the desire and duty of peace: James Madison

=
"The enemy aggressor is always pursuing a course of larceny, murder, rapine and barbarism. We are always moving forward with high mission, a destiny imposed by the Deity to regenerate our victims while incidentally capturing their markets, to civilise savage and senile and paranoid peoples while blundering accidentally into their oil wells.": John Flynn, 1944

=
We’re not a democracy. It’s a terrible misunderstanding and a slander to the idea of democracy to call us that. In reality, we’re a plutocracy: a government by the wealthy.” : Ramsey Clark, former U.S. Attorney General

=
"Of all forms of tyranny the least attractive and the most vulgar is the tyranny of mere wealth, the tyranny of plutocracy" : John Pierpont Morgan

PEI...for now

Sometimes following Republican logic is a little like watching a ferret that just got into a meth stash. You're watchin' that twitchy fucker spin all over the place, and you wish that it'd just die already and get it over with instead of breaking all the glass in the apartment and bleeding and shitting everywhere.

Color doesn't define your future but your choices do ...

Not always. Consider these five innocent black young men who were nearly beaten to death by white cops and forced to confess to a vicious crime they did not commit:

Meantime, the cops were never charged with a conspiracy crime under RICO and are living off fat pensions financed by NYC taxpayers.

Exceptions admitted.........still the choices one makes in life do define who they are be that laudable or shameful.
