At six years old he's in more danger of losing his jewels to the crossbar on his bicycle than he is to some six year old's sneaker even if it was aimed. Shots like that wearing a cup can make it worse. He's going to have to learn to pick himself up from a knock sooner or later. May as well help him pick his poison.

No sticks, no puck. No cup.

I played 7 years of lacrosse and never wore one. I did get hit square in the eye with the ball. That was before mandatory face shields. I did give one guy a two-hander to the head which may still cause ringing in his ears. Aside from that it never occured to me that a cup was important, there was too much else to worry about.

Why would it be any less necessary in soccer? Misguided kicks, and projectiles, are just as present in soccer as any other sport.

Personal experience I guess. I've been hit with a soccer ball many times in certain areas, and luckily a soccer ball is relatively soft. Sure, it hurts, but it didn't do any damage. I've also taken balls to the face several times, and again it stings a bit but it's not too bad. I can only imagine what a puck to the face (or genitals) would feel like, but I imagine it would hurt a lot more than a soccer ball. Misguided kicks might be more of a concern, but I dunno, almost 20 years of soccer and I've never taken a kick *there* before...maybe I'm just lucky
