I currently live in Winnipeg, and have lived in Toronto and Ontario. I've visited almost every major city across this great land of ours. I went to French Immersion schools since I was in kindergarten and personally feel richer for the experience. For one, know other languages, especially related languages, gives one a greater knowledge of our own. Because of what I learned in school I can actually understand some written Spanish, German, Italian and other Latin based languages.
Now, besides these rather personal points, I think that yes, it is important for all Canadians to have at least a working knowledge of both languages because they are both official languages. And it's not just people in Quebec who speak French. Winnipeg has a very large French community. So does Nova Scotia. So do a lot of other provinces. Canada is a culteral melting pot. We are always so proud of that, and yet when it comes to dealing with this smorgus-board of people in our daily lives, we act as though we're being asked to eat whale testicles (no offence to anyone that actually DOES eat whale testicles). When does the acceptance and tolerance kick in?
And yes, everyone has had some negative experiences with someone of a different culture. So what? We've probably had more bad experiences with people of our own culture or race... we just dismiss those more easily.
I think that this forum thread is completely counter-productive to any sort of political resolution to these problems. This is simply a way to spread hate-crimes without a face to the name.
I agree with many of the previous posts - grow up, people. This country doesn't need any help in THIS particular direction.
