Regardless of the price, that money was in late 1800's or early 1900's dollars... No credit back then and having to take a steamer across the Atlantic to Montreal, train to the West and then get a barren patch of land that needed to have the trees/stumps manually removed, de-rocked and tilled (by hand) before you could even think about planting a crop was not exactly the fantasy life that these folks dreamed of.
All of the above cost time and money, neither of which was in high supply to the immigrants back then..... As the saying goes, be very careful of what you wish for.
PS - You had to buy the mineral rights separately.
