It's been 125 years since the first arrival of Ukrainian immigrants

This is the year of Saskatchewan Ukrainians.

Premier Brad Wall has announced that 2016 will be the year of Saskatchewan immigrants.

"Ukrainian culture and traditions are deeply embedded in the Saskatchewan mosaic," Wall said in a news release. "Settlers from Ukraine helped build our province, bringing to their new home what our motto proudly proclaims: 'From Many Peoples, Strength.' Those traditions manifest themselves today in countless community celebrations, in educational programs, and in the longstanding relationship Saskatchewan enjoys with Ukraine."

Ukrainians still arriving

According to the provincial government, more than 13 per cent of Saskatchewan residents can trace part or all of their ancestry to Ukraine. Immigration from Ukraine continues today, with the country ranking fourth on the list of where newcomers arrive from.

The proclamation serves as a launch for anniversary celebrations that will happen across the province and the rest of the country.

Ukrainians will also celebrate Christmas this week. Ukrainians and Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January the 7th.

Wait! Canada let Ukrainians into the country? What was the government thinking to let a bunch or people from a country with a known repressive regime into the country? Not only that, their culture was so different there was no hope of them ever adapting to the Canadian way of life.

Sask didn't fly them in 125 years ago and march them straight into a nice, warm & comfy home with broadband.

Are you confusing immigrants with refugees? I don't hear about Canadians voicing their disgust with normal regular immigration, just this Syrian refugee episode. I havent heard anything lately about the Asian immigrants that make up the majority of immigrants coming here to Canada, just the Syrian Refugees. We also let those same Asians from oppressive regimes like the one in China come here, so its not the people that are the problem. People are just mad because we took in the refugees at a "in opportune time" according to most Canadians. If your going to talk **** don't try and compare apples to oranges.

No? A disgusting part of Canadian history. It took 12 years before my mom's dad was allowed to naturalize in 1922.

It was wrong in retrospect but Canada treated their internees better than most countries did and it was a national emergency.

I was quite shocked to visit Fort Oswego in Upstate New York on the shore of Lake Ontario and find out that it was an internment camp for European Jews during WWII.

59 Years Ago, They Fled To an Internment Camp - NYTimes.com

We don't have a monopoly in these matters. Some very questionable deeds like these have taken place in recent years during the war that we are involved in now. You know that it is likely the wrong thing to do when your legislation has to suspend portions of your bill of rights, wherever you happen to be.

Instead they gave them land. Wish they gave me land. Where do I complain?

What happened to a lot of groups that came to Canada was shameful.
The British had firm control and they exercised it. It was mainly the
folks of British stock that created problems for other groups as they
were more interested in holding on to the Empire as it were.
Ukrainians, Sikhs the Chinese not to mention what Canada did to the
Japanese during WWII. They really got screwed.
The reason we have the politically correct crap is because of all the
injustice to those groups and the Native Peoples across the country.
Some say oh let it go, well letting it go comes with a price and political
correctness is part of it. Good for Brad Wall actions like his do lead to
change in the long run.

HRC Tribunal?

Might be a start

Who was given land? It cost $100 to homestead.

Or 160 acres for a $10 admin fee (depends what source you read)

Regardless of the price, that money was in late 1800's or early 1900's dollars... No credit back then and having to take a steamer across the Atlantic to Montreal, train to the West and then get a barren patch of land that needed to have the trees/stumps manually removed, de-rocked and tilled (by hand) before you could even think about planting a crop was not exactly the fantasy life that these folks dreamed of.

All of the above cost time and money, neither of which was in high supply to the immigrants back then..... As the saying goes, be very careful of what you wish for.

PS - You had to buy the mineral rights separately.

Who would have guessed that irony goes completely over your head? Keep the stupid replies coming; each one makes my day.

The term "refugee" was not in use a century or so ago, so in fact most people living in poverty and desperate to get to another nation and start a new life were refugees whether whether they were classified that way or not. Essentially there is little difference between the Syrian refugees fleeing war and Ukrainians who were fleeing oppression and poverty. And before you comment further you might actually want to check Ukrainian history and find out what it was like to be a peasant farmer in Ukraine in pre-20th Century Russia.

They were economic immigrants the government set up programs that encouraged them to come to Canada and settle. We didn't take them in because they were oppressed we took them in because the government needed bodies and then when the government got them they just dumped the Ukrainians on the prairies without any financial help. Before WW1....

The Syrian Refugees are being taken in because they are displaced, have no where to go and they are receiving financial aid when they get here. I'm not worried about nomenclature here, the differences are there.

Canada's attitude towards the Ukrainian Refugees after ww1 was similar to that of the Syrians because those Ukrainians were displaced similar to the Syrians we took in now.

Right now we do not have people like Clifford Sifton quoting Horace Greely in Syria telling them to "Look West Young Man". We have people instead saying, "yeah yeah we'll take some to lessen the load"
