A lot of this assumes that the pollsters and the people being polled know what Al-Qaeda's real goal is, and I don't think they do. I think Al-Qaeda's real goal is to create fundamentalist Islamic governments everywhere from Pakistan in the east, all through the Middle East, and including Turkey, all across north Africa to Morocco on the Atlantic coast, and if they can, up into Spain and Portugal, and into eastern Europe at least up to the boundaries of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire. They want to recover all the territories that Islam once ruled, and they think fundamentalism is the way to do it. And they think that because--and I'm certain this is the Taliban calculation too--they're convinced that Islamic empire fell because it allowed western influences to subvert it even as it conquered, so God turned his face away from them. For a fundamentalist Muslim the calculation is simple: return to the old ways and God will take care of everything else, Islam will be returned to its former glory and power.
