Poll: Canadian opinion of US hits all-time low

Canadian opinion of the US has reached a record low according to a recent poll from the Environics Institute.

In the poll’s 35-year history (1982 was the first poll issued by Focus Canada), Canadians have never held such an unfavourable view of their neighbours to the south. Less than half of Canadians now hold a favourable view of the US (44%), while 53% hold an unfavourable view.

For context, in 2012, just after Obama won his second term in office, 68% of Canadians had a favourable view of the US.

The poll cuts straight to the point for the reason why: “The election of Donald Trump has had a negative impact on Canadians’ overall opinion of the USA.”

Travel to US down

According to the poll, nearly one in five Canadians (18%) has changed plans for US travel this year because of the current political climate. Another 8% are considering doing so.

Stance on immigration remains positive in Canada

Despite what’s happening in the US, opinions on immigration in Canada remain positive overall. According to the report, “More than six in ten (62%) now disagree with this negative statement about the level of immigration in Canada, up four percentage points from six months ago, and now at the highest level since March-April 2008.”

This stance seems directly correlated to Canadians’ belief that immigration has a positive impact on the economy:

Canada-US Differences

A lot of the current negative opinion Canada has for the US can be linked to its view of whether or not the two countries are more alike or more different than before. And, in the past 15 years, it’s obvious that Canadians feel the two countries are no longer moving in the same direction.

While in 2002 many Canadians thought their country was becoming more like the US, that is no longer the case. The number of Canadians who believe Canada is becoming like the US is down more than 30% in the last decade and a half.

It’s clear that the Trump administration is not winning many friends in Canada so far.

This survey is based on telephone interviews conducted with 2,002 Canadians between April 3 and 15, 2017. A sample of this size drawn from the population produces results accurate to within plus or minus 2.2 percentage points in 19 out of 20 samples.

I think Byron McGregor said it best in 1973:

When the Americans get out of this bind, as they will, who could blame them if they said "The hell with the rest of the world. Let someone else buy the Israel bonds. Let someone else build or repair foreign dams or design foreign buildings that won't shake apart in earthquakes."

* * * * *

They will come out of this thing with their flag high and when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of these, but there are many smug self-righteous Canadians.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Mr. McGregor. And it took 43 years, but you proved prophetic.

Good for selling Canadian goods and bring in tourists.. cheaper to vacation in Canada than the USA right now, and safer..

I'm surprised Trump hasn't claimed Canada is currency fixing..

Canadian business who sell to the US and abroad love it when our currency is down.

Japan buys a great deal of our fish and since they set the price in US dollars, they'll be quite happy to be buying now.

Should be interesting times ahead.

Boy, this post got my fur up. The "Let someone else build or repair the foreign dams" line in particular. Both of my siblings have built foreign dams ... my brother as the lead engineer on a project in South America, my sister as part of a design team in Southern Asia... my father, even, worked on modernizing a railroad in Africa, post-retirement. All of these were CIDA projects... Canadian projects using Canadian aid money. Fact is, the whole developed world does projects like that. The Chinese have had development projects going all over Africa since the 1970's. Strings attached? Sure. Strings attached to Peace Corps project? Major ropes attached to those. Fact is, Americans are not welcome all over as they once were. They have abused their power too many times and have used up their welcome in too many lands.

Smug, self-righteous Canadians ... Americans refer to themselves are the "leaders of democratic world". Well, there are a hundred perfectly stable, functioning democracies in the World and a whole lot of them don't consider the USA to be particularly democratic, anymore. "Leaders of Free World" is an American expression for American domestic consumption and it is not in use outside of the USA.

"WE ARE THE WORLD!"

No, you're not. You are legends in your own minds.

It has always been like this. Canadian approval of the US seems to go up with good presidents and down with bad presidents.

Lets put the hype and baiting aside First off America does not suck there are many good people
who happen to be Americans. The problem is their leader has mental issues and he is propped
up by social conservatives and an older white voter base that wants to bring back their feelings
of superiority. In the long run it won't happen this administration is about to face serious questions
and it could come down to Donald and his tax returns in the end.

What really upset me on this one was people burning the American flag. I think you can demonstrate
you can be angry and even fight with cops but burning someones flag is of disrespect beyond the pale

It's a global trend rather than a local one. (and with good reason so their bosses should also be shunned)

I agree grumpy, I too know some Americans and really like and admire them. It's their governmentS (plural) not just the current administration that has led them to be one of the most hated countries in the world (me thinks Israel would be #1 which is stupid because there are so many others that deserve the moniker but I digress). The elites (not unlike Canada) have a hold of power and it doesn't matter who is elected, you get the same old, same old - greedy bastards who could care a less about the average person. They're all hypocrites and even if you get someone who truly has the best interests of the country at heart, they drown in the sea of corruption and complicity.

I believe it's the reason why America is in the situation it is because Americans are truly sick and tired of being sick and tired and voted with their fingers crossed hoping to shake things up. How can one possibly chose between two horrible choices .... They may regret their decision but I understand it and hope for the best. The "other" elites are doing their best to ensure that somehow, Trump is either impeached or gotten rid of so it'll be interesting to see what happens. In all likelihood, his ego will be his downfall either way.

Perfect. We'll step out, and what with all y'all morally superior countries taking care of things, y'all won't even notice we're gone.

The problem isn't the United States, it's Trump..

He is arrogant, loud, a bully and stupid.

As far as the USA, most people are cool, it's a great country with lots of places to see.

Canada and the USA are "Children of a Common Mother"

As two nations that have shared the longest undefended border for over 100 years, we should always remember that we are very close allies and the best trading partners.. it would be ashamed to damage that relationship.. even if Trump is working hard at it..

3 years, 8 months and 10 days and 19 hrs they will elect a new President countdown

Lots of people hate Americans but then the haters on the other hand also love American movies, music, sports, mannerism's, apple pie etc.... So i guess no one in Canada really hates Americans.

Trust me, this news has launched a national conversation. Seriously, "How can we make the Canadians like us more?" is now regarded as the single most important issue in America today.

No, seriously.

I mean it.

Stop laughing!
