See what happens when people for for the radical right, Momsie? The Liberals and Conservatives love the idea of being able to spy on their citizens...it gives them an idea as to which fear buttons to press in the next election.

When you say they stopped everybody and demanded ID, do you mean they asked the drivers for their licenses, or did they ID everyone?

You do not have to give any officer ID. If any officer quizes you or asks for anything, simply ask "Am I under arrest?" If the answer is "no" or if there is no answer forthcoming, go on about your business.

Also, if police wish to search your car, ask what they are looking for, and ask what cause they have to believe you are in possession. Police can not search without reasonable cause.

I can't stand the idea of street cameras. Has nobody read 1984? Got a pellet gun? And a balaclava?

As for the hot tub incident, just the boys being arseholes. Complain.

The only people that have rights are those that exercise them.

26 hour raodblocks are police state .Plain and simple I've got no problem with roadblocks for drinking and driving but stopping all vehicles on a major highway and asking where you going and why and for id is a complete joke on the taxpayer and there promising to have more .This is all just a warm up to the time the really start slapping the restrictions on us .You've got to admit were rapidly losing our freedoms all in the name of law and order :( I can't wait to here my brother inlaws excuses for this shit being a member of the RCMP.I'll get back to ya with those after christmas

I couldn't agree more and you know who'll be getting my vote

And you'll wind up with cameras in your bedroom to make sure you are not being rude to your wife. :D

1984 was a warning about the left. However, extremes on either end of the spectrum are equally obnoxious.

Did the police have the decency to tell people what this roadblock was about??? Or were the people to just go on "faith"..??? Would be interesting to hear their "explanation" for this roadblock and the search lights. Gotta wonder if they were on some "excercise " or looking for someone.

I would try to find out WHY this road block took place etc and the best place would be your local RCMP station. That is what I would do.......as that way you can get in your complaint too.

You still have the RIGHT to KNOW.......even if they cannot provide "detail"s ......they can give you an idea.

just some thoughts on this.

It was about the same thing that such police actions are always about...a fishing expedition.

This is no different than when the Texas State Troopers were performing illegal searches in BC under the guise of training the RCMP. Training? Yeah, they were training them to trample all over the rights of anybody that happened to drive by.

1984 was a warning against fascism and police states, Colpy. It is the right in Canada that is creeping toward those things.

It is the left that want to come into law-abiding citizens' homes and seize their legal guns. Who are the facsists?

Mrmom, I hope you gave the coppers a piece of your mind. I've got yer ID right here, mo-fo!

why would you suggest that someone be AGGRESSIVE with the cops??? What will it achieve to "give them a piece of your mind"??? Their job is not easy by any stretch....and antagonizing them only puts one in their "head lights".
Suspect that cops take more than their share of abuse..........and yet when one is in trouble........who does one call???

(but each to his own.. )

Sometimes it is a good idea to see things from the other "side" ...

The left wants to do no such thing, MMMikey. If you actually knew anything about the NDP, you'd know that.

If you knew anything about the Conservatives, you'd know that they were harshly critical of the Liberals not going even farther with their "anti-terrorist" legislation. You'd know that they tried to shout Bill Blaikie down in the House when he dared to stand up and speak up for the rights of Canadians. You'd know that they support internal passports, security certificates, holding people without charge or trial, secret trials where the defendant is not allowed to see the evidence against him, allowing Canadians to be rendered by US spy agencies and a thousand other infringments of our rights.

You are selling your soul for a 1% reduction in the GST.

In a more general way, both the left and the right
contribute to the loss of our liberty, especially when
it involves privacy, the well spring of most liberty.

The right does it more often with brute force,
claiming national security trumps the liberty issue
because there is no liberty without security.

The left does the same attack on our liberties
in a more unconscious, unintended way.
The left is all about enhancing the people's
rights to having a better life and so many regulations
ensue to enforce these. Examples abound, but
maybe this is for another thread than this Canada-
specific one.

In this country people have the right to go about their business without being pulled over or harassed by the police for no reason. The power to set up RIDE checkpoints are a special exception that we (society) give the police. They have no right to stop motorists and demand to see their identification. It reeks of fascism.

I agree.
Though we should support our police when we can.

I agree that certain security measures to need to be taken, but we need to seriously consider the line between "security" and "breach of rights." I think that both the House of Commons and the Senate have done a great deal of important consideration on this very subject, especially in relation to the Antiterrorism Act • La loi antiterroriste.

For example, both Chambers have been very wary of the Government's use of security certificates, even if their use has been very conservative so far, to detain persons without necessarily such a detainee of the cause of their imprisonment. The legislation regarding security certificates should be repealed, in my opinion; nobody should be arrested without being informed of the charge and the evidence against them.

As for recent measures to grant police more access to our e-mail and Internet activity, I would urge anyone who is "cautious" regarding this measure to read the terms and conditions and contractual text regarding your use of the Internet and the services thereon — more often than not, some sort of provision in that agreement already gives your provider the right to give away your personally identifiable information, instant messages, and e-mail content to the Government or law enforcement agencies under exigent circumstances.
