York Regional Police Const. Garrett Styles
This hardly looks like remorse.
As an underage and unlicensed driver who snuck out to go joyriding with his parents’ minivan, 15-year-old S.K. (his name protected by a publication ban) took off from a traffic stop and dragged Const. Garrett Styles to his death in June 2011.
In November 2015, S.K. was sentenced to what was widely regarded as a light youth sentence after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder for causing the death of the York Regional Police officer. Although he faced up to 10 years in custody, he was given nine years of community supervision — essentially probation.

Man who dragged cop to death admits to manslaughter

York Regional Police Const. Garrett Styles
An Ontario man who dragged a police officer to his death while out for a joyride more than eight years ago pleaded guilty to manslaughter to Monday, York Regional Police Chief Eric Joliffe said in a press release.
Identified only S.K., because he was 15 at the time of the crime, the man was sentenced to two years probation and conditions were placed on his operation of a motor vehicle.
On June 28, 2011, the under-age S.K. took his father’s Dodge Caravan to go joyriding with three friends. At around 4:45 a.m., he was pulled over by Const. Garrett Styles on Hwy. 48 for going 147 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

He refused to get out of the minivan because he didn’t want it to be impounded. Styles opened the driver’s side door to undo the teen’s seatbelt.
The minivan then sped across the highway, dragging the 32-year-old officer along with it. The vehicle entered a field, became airborne and rolled before coming to a stop.
Styles was pinned under the driver’s side tire, where he soon died of his injuries.
S.K., who had broken his neck in three places, was rendered a quadriplegic.
In 2015, S.K. was convicted of first-degree murder in Newmarket, Ont.
However, last fall, the Ontario Court of Appeal had ordered a new trial, stating S.K.’s “age and level of maturity were relevant to the issue of whether or not he knew Const. Styles’ death was a likely outcome of his actions,” Joliffe said in the release.
