Police have stormed a bowling alley at a leisure complex in Nuneaton and ended an armed hostage siege, the firm's chief executive has told the BBC.

Mehdi Amshar said two hostages had been held at MFA Bowl, in Bermuda Park, but the situation has now ended and there were no casualties.

Warwickshire Police have not commented but earlier said the incident was unconnected to terrorism.

Eyewitnesses spoke of hiding during the police lockdown at the complex.

'Hiding in the toilet'

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it had been called to the leisure complex at 15:40 BST.

MFA Bowl chief executive Mr Amshar said he understood the man was known to a member of staff at the bowling alley.

Staff realised two members of staff were missing when a headcount was completed after an evacuation, he added.

Everyone else had been accounted for and police officers were now negotiating with the man, Mr Amshar said.

The gunman has been described by eyewitnesses as "in his 40s" and carrying a gun "slung" over his shoulder.

Chris Turner told the BBC he saw the man "ran up to the door of the bowling alley with a gun in his hand" and told him to "get out".

He said the man also shouted at a crowd of people outside to leave, saying: "I've already told you once."

A number of ambulances have also been dispatched to the area around the bowling alley

Earlier, Kelly Perrett, who was at the Frankie and Benny's restaurant, told the BBC: "I am hiding in the toilet with about 20 people.

"It looks like police have got the bowling alley surrounded. The police told me that the gunman is near the door with a hostage."

Megan Westward said she was about to leave a children's soft play centre when staff told her to move away from the windows.

"There are quite a few bullet proof vans," she said. "We've just seen an air ambulance take off. There are ambulances and there are police in full body suits with guns."

She was then evacuated to a nearby hotel.

The ambulance service said it had "a number of resources" at the scene, including a hazardous area response team and an emergency planner.

An air ambulance was initially dispatched to the scene but has now left.

Bermuda Park includes a Holiday Inn Express hotel, a gym, a DIY store, a soft play centre and several restaurants.

This is the terrifying moment a man armed with a sawn-off shotgun showed police one of his hostages after he stormed a bowling alley packed with children.

The suspect, a white man in his 40s, strolled around the MFA Bowl at Bermuda Park in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, brandishing the weapon before taking two staff members hostage.

A witness claimed the man shouted 'game over' as he walked through the building in front of terrified families and he was later arrested by officers.

Around 30 armed police officers attended the scene and all of the roads around the popular leisure park were closed off.

Eyewitness Alex Moore-Holland said the gunman started shouting 'game over' while he was holding the sawn-off shotgun.*

He told Sky News: 'I turned around and there was a white guy with a greyish beard and he had a gun above his head.

'He was shouting 'game over, game over' and people were screaming. I just ran and got out there.'*

Witness Lawrence Hallett was just feet away from the gunman when he was ordered to leave the bowling alley with his family.

He told Sky News: 'I thought it was a joke and panicked a little bit.'

Mr Hallett said he then ran 'hell for leather' with his family out of the building before the gunman came out and started swearing.

The witness said: 'We hung around outside for a little while. We didn't know what to do, what was going on.**

'He came out and swore and said 'What the heck are you guys?', unslung his gun and went back in again.

'And at that point we backed off to our cars. There was no organised withdrawal. There was a guy with a gun.'

'We headed for the cars in a bit of a panic and managed to get to safety at Bermuda Park.'

The "balls" were cheese wheels but there it is.

Nothing wrong with that.

The manly Henry VIII used cannonballs:

Ten-pin bowling is most popular in the United States and the United Kingdom.

A site in Southampton, England claims to be the oldest lawn bowling site still in operation, with records showing the game has been played on the green there since 1299.[5] The first written reference to bowling dates to 1366, when King Edward III of England banned his troops from playing it so that they could focus more on their archery practice.[6] It is believed that King Henry VIII bowled using cannonballs. Henry VIII also famously banned bowling for all but the upper classes, because so many working men and soldiers were neglecting their trades.[5]
