So they can communicate with use with language

They have IQ's comparable to ours (genius apes are average humans)

They use tools, much like some still used by tribal people today (though cruder)

And we lock them in cages and do aids experimentation on them?

At one point do we draw the line on sentient..is it a proportional thing? IF so..does that mean when someone (probably soon) genetically engineers a human who is as far above the common man as we are above chimps that we'll end up in cages?

Great book I have just finished called, Inside the Animal Mind by George Page. Anyone who reads that I think would be a little slower to mock Zzarchov.

Not surprising. People do that to other people, too.

If we have respect for all things, the lines are very clear and already drawn.

We should be using conservatives and republicans for these experiments.

Whooooaaaaa darkbeaver. That's way up there on the insult scale. Bet you wouldn't have got away with it if I had said it and I used Christians in place of conservatives! ;-)

Just kiddin, it's not really offensive at all either way IMO.

Just a question:

If someone raised a chimp to be able to speak in sign language, use human facilities like the toilet, wear basic clothing, etc.

And taught it how to do some menial job, like busing tables or stocking shelves. All of which it is capable of doing.

Would you think it appropriate to pay it a wage?

Or provide the guy with meals, or other things he wants, sure. Why not?

I don't know that paying it a wage would be beneficial to the chimp.. I mean, what would it buy? It wouldn't understand the concept of money. However, the first part of your question has already been answered...

...and yes, I agree, we have a terrible reputation for what we do to animals!

Ah, and here I walk a thin line likely to get me negative rep points out the wazoo.....

We pay the mentally handicapped to work, why not a primate with equivalent mental facilities? The only problem is, the mentally handicapped have families and social workers to spend their money for them. I can't see it being economically feasible for the world to assign social workers to manage the pay of each well trained monkey doing a job. They simply don't have the same value in society's eyes as a human. I don't know that there is any right answer there Zzaarchov.
