Pasta Maker in Boiling Water Over Comments on Gays

Barilla, the classic Italian pasta company, has found itself in scalding hot water after its chairman said gay families have no place in its advertising.

“For us the concept of the sacred family remains one of the basic values of the company,” Guido Barilla said in an radio interview Wednesday, translated by the Guardian. “I would not [feature gay families in advertisements], but not out of a lack of respect for homosexuals who have the right to do what they want without bothering others… [but] I don’t see things like they do and I think the family that we speak to is a classic family.”

And if gay consumers don’t like it? “Eat another brand of pasta,” he said.

The comments sparked an immediate backlash around the world, both in the form of boycotts and a slew of negative customer commentary on Facebook and Twitter.

Others are linking to Ragu and other competitors.

Although Barilla has posted apologies on the company’s Italian Twitter and Facebook pages — “I have the utmost respect for gay people and for everyone’s right to express themselves,” he said — the company’s U.S. social media accounts have thus far remained silent, even as criticism on its American-based social media outlets continues.

Barilla’s U.S. office could not immediately be reached for comment.

I am pro same sex marriage, but, I also don't think it needs to be so over represented. And, it sounds to me like the chairman is showing his age, not hatred.

I'd agree with that. He's not being hateful about it like some do.

Besides the pasta is really freaking good. I'm pro same sex marriage too and what goes into my pantry is important, but not for political reasons.

He also made a very bad business decision.
He stated what the company would and would not do.
Yes it is privately owned.
But on the other side he is entitled to his views.

It's stupid for any business owner to make a statement in public that could potentially ostracize a portion of the public. You should avoid controversy like the plague if you're in business, that's just common sense. Think what you want, say very little.

Having said that, although I am very much in support of same sex marriage, I don't have the expectation that everyone will or even should be on board with supporting it. Personally I'm very much satisfied with an attitude of 'live and let live', no opposition but not actively supporting it either. And to be honest, that's kind of what I take from what he said.

It's also really important, I think, not to jump on every single thing. I think if you do, if you blow this up beyond what it really is, you kind of run the risk of 'crying wolf'. Then when something really is oppressive, well you run the risk that your supporters will be diminished because they've grown tired of all the excess drama.

dad for some reason likes Scooby doo.

This may be his religious upbringing.. many strong Catholics do not condone same sex marriage.. you know; "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

So I think the boycotting people are being racist towards his religious faith. (so there)
