You are very right about that. Although christians talk about faith and spirituality, they have almost no idea what they mean. I never thought of it terms of trying to fill the void in their belief system but that makes perfect sense. The catholic church was more concerned with saving souls than people. The crusades and the inquisition were proof of that.
In my area, the first Jesuits arrived with a Small Pox vaccine but would only administer it to those who would convert. Whole tribes perished because they thought the priests were trying to poison them with their needles or wouldn't convert.
