Our obsession (if you will)over money is out of pure need that at times turns to greed. It's really always been that way. Before money people traded goods for goods or goods for a job done. People have always wanted to receive something material for any and all deeds. All this led to money being a necessity of life. We need it to buy food, to buy a home, a car, insurance, medicine and of course - our toys. I think a sacrifice in the way you speak of it, is only a sacrifice if you feel you are making one. If we don't leave the country for a big holiday, are we really sacrificing anything for example? We live in a fantastic country, second to none in this world. Money cannot necessarily buy happiness but again, it depends on what you call happiness at any given time in your life. For some people, probably many people, having enough money to not be in any kind of debt with the ability to stay that way (no fancy trips, no big fancy toys like boats, or RV's etc) but going out for dinner maybe once a month, buying good food and not just what you have to buy so you can eat "something" would suit many people. The ability to spend time with family, but easily pay the bills on time (hydro etc.) is what most people crave. Many have that, many want much more. It's okay to have more, it's okay to want more just so long as you recognize what your ability to pay is. If you don't, you do have an obsession - not with money - but with material goods, and you need to reign yourself in.

why don't you guys start staying on topic and stop throwing it way off!!

would society ever be able to work if they just started giving stuff to people..

start from the top.

they need to build a building they build it, the groceries stores give food to people, people eat it. they all go work and they do work to make the world run.

so if everything and everyone did everything without money.. then nobody would need to make money.

it would have to be absolutely everything.

just a system I suppose. but then perhaps it starts to look like a communist state.

For most people money is security. For people like Trump it's a bit of a drug.
