Wind Mobile, Canada's new major cellphone provider, will open stores and announce its service plans Wednesday.

The company, fresh off receiving the federal government's blessing on Friday to launch its service, said it will announce its handset lineup and pricing plans at a news conference in Toronto on Wednesday morning.

Wind, the brand name to be used by parent Globalive Communications Corp., said its network is up and running in Toronto and Calgary, with "beta" customers testing it. The company is opening a host of retail stores in the two cities, as well as kiosks at Blockbuster Video outlets — 13 in the Greater Toronto Area and three in Calgary.

This obviously will move quickly across Canada.. I am sure with Cell Towers in Vancouver, they will soon open up here as well..

Cancel the CRTC and we might get some real competition. Not only for cell phones. As a captive viewer I'm obliged to pay for at least a hundred channels I dont watch. The cable companies are required to carry them. I would like to see American carriers come in holus bolus and shove Telus and Rogers to where the sun dont shine!

I would like to see the CRTC's mandate minimized to enforcing Canadian Content rules in media. As it is, they exist to protect Rogers, Bell & Telus's respective regional monopolies.

Update....... Stores in Toronto today, later this week in Calgary and in Vancouver, Ottawa and Edmonton in the new year.

TORONTO — Wireless provider Wind Mobile launched its cellphone and data service Wednesday, bringing a new player and more competition into the already hotly contested cellphone market.

Wind, owned by Yak long-distance provider Globalive, opened 18 outlets in the Toronto area, with plans to open more later this week in Calgary and in Vancouver, Ottawa and Edmonton in the new year.

The company is pinning its competitive hopes on contractless price plans, which it says reflect what Canadians really want when they buy a cellphone, when it goes up against the already established players, Rogers (TSX), Bell (TSX:BCE), and Telus (TSX:T).

"Today marks a new chapter for wireless in Canada," said Wind chairman Anthony Lacavera.

Globalive was given the go-ahead to operate in Canada on Friday when Industry Minister Tony Clement overturned a CRTC ruling -- which stated it wasn't Canadian-owned or controlled -- that had prevented an earlier launch. Globalive is 65 per cent owned by Egyptian telecom giant Orascom.

Conservatives rules against the government regulatory agency because they want to, just like the nuclear agency where they turned on the power to Chalk River ignoring safety protocols eventually it had to be shut down.

Canada does not have the population to support four cell phone companies so one will go out of business.

America has more choice because they have the population to support it like 230 million people to our 30 million people

I have a feeling that the Conservatives want to get rid of the foriegn ownership rules so important national industries can be bought up by non Canadians.

Canada, you did it again. Because over 70,000 mobile phone and Internet users just like you helped sustain a multi-year campaign to Demand Choice in our wireless market, we are now on our way to a fourth national mobile carrier.

It was revealed today that independent provider Wind Mobile has received around $300 million in new investment money. This means mobile phone and Internet subscribers across the country can look forward to greater choice and affordability in the near future. This will go a long way in helping the spunky new provider offer an alternative to the Big Three – Bell, Rogers, and Telus – who currently control just over 90% of our mobile market.

And it’s about time! Canada’s Big Telecom giants continue to; fight the hard-won customer protection rules mentioned above, hike up wireless prices across the board, send collection agencies after customers who have paid their bills in full, and many many more egregious abuses of Canadians’ trust.
