Ottawa is going "overboard" with a program, launching Monday, that will check air passengers' names against a list of those deemed potential threats, a transportation expert says.

Harper is doing everything he can to be like Bush except change his name to "Stephen Bush". Already, Canadian housewives with valid passports have found themselves on this freeking list. It is somehow up to them to get their names off the list. This was insanity in the states and it is even more insane here. Impeach Harper!!!

I thought the no-fly list idea was started by the bureucracy while Martin was around. Harper was the peon in office when the bureucracy completed its implementation.

My problem with it is what if there was a terrorist who had the same name as you? Or the way the airlines work , the same last name and first initial.

I blame whoever is Prime Minister. If Martin started it, I'll blame him too.

If a terrorist has the same last name and a same initial. (an unlikely scenario).....I doubt he has the same address or the same passport, or the same bank account, or the same doctor, etc. If we are going to put someone through hell, wouldn't it be better if we did a modicum of checking?

So are they actually checking address, etc? From the news reports I hear, they mention name and name only. Do you know the specifics? I think name alone is incredably stupid. Address is also not on a passport. And you don't need a passport to fly to Saskatoon. You also do not require a bank account or doctor to fly. And what 12 year old has any id with an address on it?

The thing that gets me, is that the victim of this foolishness is expected to get him/herself out of the mess. The required checking should be the responsibility of the clowns making the list. I have a very common surname and there must be thousands with at least one similar initial. The more you think about this list, the stupider (more stupid) it gets.

The chances of those voting NAY not catching grief for supporting terrorism?

Is there a way to check this list before buying a ticket?

It would make sense that Air Canada would not take money from you if they knew you couldn't fly. But this is Air Canada. They probably take your money and charge you a surcharge if you are denied travel.

We now know that the 9/11 hijackers were terrorists because they are on the Canadian no-fly list. None of those terrorists will be able to fly on any Canadian airline. I feel much safer........Kidding........Maybe if we just disallowed anyone with an Arab-sounding name......or whoever looked like an Arab........paranoid nonsense...

Why are you worried?

They need to put in a bit for facial voice and other recognition prograams. But imagine what would happen if it went like this Air Canada flew known terrorist using his passport ..... later committed mas destruction in albequrque or whatever.. itd be a huge embarasment that they slipped through their fingers.

But use of the list could also be used to keep 'sensitive' people under wraps and going no where fast.. be it defectors or otherwise. It basically is a measure to override the canadian constitution for individuals suspected but not yet brought to justice or have not received a trial. It has to do with the powers to confine without legal grounds other then an onging breach of the peace based un unsubstantiated facts. It is much like a broader security certificate.

I potentially hav a criminal record, even though IMO I was framed for what I was convicted, of may not be allowed entry to places like the US. Even though the chrages do translate to misdeourmenors and technically I should be allowed entry unless exceptional circumstances are involved.

It is basically a 'nice' way of saying political prisoner.

Of course this is nothing.. but with just a name list it ain't enough.. they should be insuring people are being recognized and integration of biometrics is used to insure that little errors can't be used to let someone use someone elses passport.

Of course getting a passport will likely be a little easier come October when new gaurenture rules come into effect., I totally support the measure.

In general though ' bail jumpers or people with warrants should all be on the list' just using a terrorist watch list is foolish. Technically the terrorist should have a warrant out on them.
Otherwise I think it violates the constitution.

A no fly list is like a virus scanner, only as good as the last update. I would hope that known terrorists and their alias' are constantly updated. No fly list version 1.001 comes with a neat add-on, a Mr. Potato Head to update physical appearance....

not in Kansas anymore
I have been watching this debate unfold over the past couple of days and quite frankly it irritates me. The people who oppose the measure are linking it to the regular stand-by excuse "AMERICA". We are not America and never will be. This measure was started by the libs and finished by the cons,so maybe can the partisan crap. Sure it may inconvenience one or two people every year, hopefully not me or you,but it may also stop another Air India, which is a hell of a big inconvenience. Should we stop arresting people because occasionally the wrong person is arrested? If one reads the criteria for being placed on the list,it will make sense to most. Those are pretty strict guidelines. It will not stop the determined terrorist but it may stop the raving lunatic with an axe to grind.Of course, some out there will always portray this as another step towards being America's 51st province, but these feebs are incapable of critical thought and should be ignored.I fly 3 or 4 times a year and welcome this attempt to save myself and fellow travellers. I also agree with racial profiling in airports, just a little nugget for the leftoids.
