Opinion - Wynne's cannabis retail plan a buzzkill*
Jamie Ellerton, Special to the Toronto Sun

* having a depressing effect

While politicos were feverishly high with Premier Kathleen Wynne testifying in a Sudbury courtroom last week at the trial of her Liberal Party lieutenants facing election law bribery charges, Ontarians were left scratching their heads after her government’s cannabis retailing scheme was announced.

For all the talk of wanting to take illicit cannabis off of our streets, away from organized crime, and out of the hands of Ontario’s minors, Wynne decreeing the half-baked debate done is likely setting the stage for her government’s next billion-dollar boondoggle and accomplishing none of the above.

Wynne’s government rushed an announcement that only unionized bureaucrats will be trusted to sell legalized recreational cannabis after the federal government legalizes it on July 1, 2018. Trusting the province’s citizens appears to be a non-starter.

Ontarians can only hope the government-run cannabis counter offers better product knowledge than the rationale her attorney general and finance minister pedalled before the cameras last week like down-market dealers trying to prove themselves to the boss.

The rest here.

That is my feeling as well. There will be many federal and provincial new hires to work for a growing Health Canada department. As well, Ontario is starting up a Cannabis Control Board. The bureaucracy continues to swell.
