Ontario Gas Meters

A member of our family had a broken gas meter replaced by Enbidge in March 2011. They finally got around to "adjusting" the bill 6 months later (Sept. 2011). They determined that the meter had stopped working in Sept 2009 (!). It took them 2 years to "solve" the problem and now they just mailed a bill for +$2,000 as they have estimated how much gas was used in the last 24 months.

Are there any rules about how far back they can go to "adjust" a bill? We have 23 monthly bills that said that there wasn't a problem before getting a 10 page one with dozens of "corrections". Any suggestions on where we can find information about this?

No but I know if you get overcharged they will reimburse you so it go's both ways.I sometimes work with the electrical boys and have heard some wild stories about gas and power meters. The new digital ones are pretty accurate but the old style were not very consistent and prone to faults and tampering.

Heres a story I heard 2 days ago. Back around 1960 an old fellow walks into the calgary power office and says he wants to get on the 24 hour plan for his power. There is no such plan so they went to his bachelour pad to see what he was talking about.Seems the old fellow had had his house wired from the city street light for 20 years and as he only had 2 light bulbs, they allways worked. It was when he bought a tv that he noticed he had no power during the day when the streetlights went off.So he thought he was on a 12 hour plan.
Heh! they had to pay him back a whole bunch of money as back then there was a minimum charge no matter how much power you used.

I would contact Tim Hudak or Andrea Vorhath's office and make it snappy.
