Ontario, elementary teachers reach deal
After months of tense, on-and-off talks, the provincial government and school boards have at last reached a tentative settlement with the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, a deal to be announced by Education Minister Liz Sandals late Monday afternoon just hours after a contract was finalized with the union representing school support staff.
The government and school boards now have deals with all major education unions.
“This round of bargaining has been exceptionally lengthy and difficult but in the end we achieved a tentative agreement that ETFO believes is fair and meets the needs of our members,” said Sam Hammond, president of the 78,000-member union, in a written statement released moments before Sandals was set to speak.
