Gopher, On the surface this is funny, but it diminishes the tradition of saluting.
And yes, Bush looks like a dick too. Put the damn Bunny down and give a proper salute.
Tradition, my red a$$. There is no "tradition" of the President saluting the Marine guards. First one to do it was Reagan, and he did it as a joke, FFS. It ain't like this goes back to George Washington, much less John Hanson.

This is just another example of how desperate right-wingers are to hate the ******.

Desperate about what? Don't be an idiot.

Saluting has been around longer than the United States, never mind your Commander and Chief. This isn't a right/left issue for me, it's about not making a mockery of a time honored tradition. How many Officers use their coffee cup or a bunny to return a salute? None. You know why? Because when you are given a salute you respond with a salute and guess what?

If your hands are full you can give an eyes right or left. Turn the head and acknowledge. That easy.

It was stupid of Bush and stupid of Obama. They are the Commander and Chief for f_ck sake. This makes them not a Officer but the Officer and if they are saluted it is incumbent upon them to return the salute with the same respect with which it was given.

Have a little pride in your country. You don't have to piss on it every day.

If he rendered a proper military salute, the ODS sufferers would scream that as somebody who never served, he has no right to render the salute.

If he rendered something close to a military salute, the ODS sufferers would pick apart every detail about how wrong it was (ignoring the fact that the services salute differently).

If he makes a non-saluting gesture, the ODS sufferers will scream about how he's not saluting.

If he makes no gesture at all, the ODS sufferers will shriek that he's disrespecting the military.

You can see it down in the thread about the airstrikes. The ODS sufferers are generally delighted that we're a-killin' them ragheads, but they will do nothing but criticise Obama.
If he just IS they will find or invent a problem.

I'll pass your instructions along to the White House, mmm-kay? I'm sure they'll leap to it.

A President returning the salute is a tradition that dates back to Reagan. A President is a civilian. The salute isn't required
And arguably isn't even permitted. Even military members do not salute when not in uniform. When and where and how to salute are covered by the regulations and training manuals of the Defense Department and the services, none of which apply to the President. Any attempt to say he should salute, or not salute, or how he should salute, is pure ODS crap.

Commander and Chief.

Make all the excuses you want. The President is their Commander and Chief.

He's not a sworn member of the military. He's not in uniform. The Uniform Code of Military Justice and the regulations of the Department of Defense and the services do not apply to him. No amount of calling him Commander in Chief will make him a soldier.

Okay sorry about that I guess Commander and Chief just means "guy in suit" in your book. Guess he should just shut up when his Generals advise him, because he's just a civilian and calling him Commander and Chief really means he has zero military authority.

Quick question here: Do you have any idea how unbelievably retarded you sound?

The Commander in Chief need not be military. In our philosophy of government, he is not military (we call that "civilian control of the military" FYI).

How retarded do I sound, compared to a Canadian asserting that the President of the United States has a duty or responsibility to render a proper military salute, without citation to any of the authorities that define what a proper military salute is and how, when, and under what circumstances it is rendered?

You're great, RCS. You always, always, ALWAYS go for the personal attack. It's like sunrise and tax bills.

They could say something like 'Hey you wannbe chief, you need a bigger cup if you're trying to hide those things people normally call ears.'. Nothing like that so he escaped unscathed, in the real world the matter would have been 'fixed' right there and then. Obamaman could then . . . . you know . . . do it . . sort of . .

Oh and look. Heres the guy who started it all.

What you don't know would fill every byte of computer storage on the planet, with plenty of ignorance left over.
