Obama Cancels Meeting With Putin Amid Tension Over Snowden

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama canceled a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin set to be held in Moscow next month, following Russia's decision to grant asylum to former U.S. contractor Edward Snowden, the White House said Wednesday.

U.S.-Russian relations have been strained over Moscow's handling of Mr. Snowden, the National Security Agency leaker who was granted asylum in Russia last week. The White House had previously signaled Mr. Obama was unlikely to attend a planned one-on-one meeting with Mr. Putin next month in Moscow ahead of the Group of 20 summit in St. Petersburg.

"There are times when they slip back into Cold War thinking and Cold War mentality," Mr. Obama said of Russia in an interview on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" on Tuesday night. "What I continually say to them and to President Putin, that's the past."
Mr. Obama still plans to attend the G-20 summit scheduled for early September, which Russia is hosting.

White House spokesman Jay Carney in a statement said the decision came after the Obama administration "reached the conclusion that there is not enough recent progress in our bilateral agenda with Russia" to hold the meeting.

"Given our lack of progress on issues such as missile defense and arms control, trade and commercial relations, global security issues, and human rights and civil society in the last 12 months, we have informed the Russian government that we believe it would be more constructive to postpone the summit until we have more results from our shared agenda," the statement said. "Russia's disappointing decision to grant Edward Snowden temporary asylum was also a factor that we considered in assessing the current state of our bilateral relationship."

The White House said it will continue with a Washington meeting later this week between Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian officials "to discuss how we can best make progress moving forward on the full range of issues in our bilateral relationship."

Before heading to Russia for the G-20, Mr. Obama will go to Stockholm Sept. 4 and 5, the White House said in a brief statement Wednesday. The White House said Sweden plays a "key leadership role on the international stage, including in opening new trade and investment opportunities through the U.S.-EU trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, advancing clean technologies, and promoting environmental sustainability."

Both of these two are acting like children. When a world power like the U.S. goes after one man, they almost always end up looking dumb.

How is Putin acting childish? In the absence of an extradition treaty, he said he'd let Russian law run its course (as if he had any other option seeing that most Russian power is in the Duma anyway). Even if Putin did want to extradite Snowden, he would have had to present a bill to the Duma, and have the Duma vote for it. Seeing that the US has no treaty with Russia, why would they support sending Snowden back when the US refuses to send russian criminals back? It takes two to tango.

So again I ask, how exactly is Putin acting childish here?

Really, Snowden should not be a big deal between the two. The relationship between the US and Russia is a hell of a lot more important than him.

In spite of Obama turning down a meeting between the two, Putin has made it clear that the offer still stands. Again, who looks better here with one acting out a temper tantrum and the other saying let's work this out?

In one sense, this is not just about Snowden, but all russians seeking assylum in teh US and vice versa. So it's much bigger and Russia understands this. Too bad Obama does not.

Seems pretty petty.

Frankly the response to this has been so grotesquely disproportionate to the revelation.. that i really wonder what else they are worried about being leaked.

It seems to me the recent terror alert, which had embassies being closed around the Middle East.. was intended to bolster the case that this comprehensive, over reaching invasion of privacy is warranted by its prevention of terrorism.

When, as everyone expected, nothing happened.. they can make the completely unsubstatiated claim that their intelligence and precautions 'prevented' the attack.. If something did happen they can say i told you so.. they have themselves covered for all eventualities.

I get the feeling the American public is being sold a bridge between Brooklyn and Manhattan, at a vastly exaggerated price in terms of their Rights. What does the U.S. have planned that it needs to intrude into to all private communication in the country.. it might be worse than any prospective terrorist attack could inflict.

Like visiting Detroit?

lol

Well Putin just recently banned gays from even adopting but hey, that's no big deal for prog-rock star Obama. Once you start with the serious ****, like protecting the guy that sold out 'murica, Obama will ignore your ***.

Anyway, there's that part of me that wonders if this decision is truly the will of Obamers or if he's just appeasing the administration as their mouthpiece.

This is international theatre for two leaders with serious problems.
Snowden is no big deal except in the mind of those with sinister
secrets. America wants to protect its violations of human rights
and secrets. Russia has been in the business of violating human
rights for nearly a century. No I suggest this is a mutual thing
here to draw attention away from the real issues.
America spying on friends as well as enemies is really no big deal
All countries do it its when it becomes public something has to be
done. Snowden must be punished because the White House is
embarrassed.
In Russia's case they didn't think their assault on gays would
produce such an angry response.
I also like the Detroit comment the city destroyed by the Bush
administration for making all those free trade deals and allowing
cheap under value product to end up on Walmart shelves from
China. Those international trade deals destroyed America for now.

Yes, that law goes too far. But that's also a separate matter from an extradition treaty.

So if Detroit were given the power to raise tarrifs, that would make everything better?
