The mass and composition of the Canadian penny has changed over the last 70 years as penny-pinching measures.
1942-1979 3.24 g/penny 98% copper with zinc and tin making up the remaining 2%
1980- 1981 2.80 g/penny 98% copper with zinc and tin making up the remaining 2%
1982- 1996 2.50 g/penny 98% copper with zinc and tin making up the remaining 2%
1997-1999 2.25 g/penny 98% zinc with tin and copper plate making up the remaining 2%
2000-2012 2.35 g/penny 98% steel with tin and copper plate making up the remaining 2%
So, what you must do is sort your pennies by date first, then weigh each pile, and finally do the calculation.
I throw all my pennies in a large glass bowl. Have done for years. There are quite a few new looking pennies, but there are no 2012
pennies. Wonder why that is. It's about time I turned these pennies in because the bowl now weighs roughly 43 pounds according to our bathroom scale. How many pennies make a pound?
PS...A rough estimate is 6150 pennies in roughly 43 pounds of pennies
OK so face value is worth $1.43 a lb. Copper is worth approx. $4 a lb. So are the pennies a copper alloy?
