My issue with teachers and education in general these days is it is entirely designed around the average. When I was in school we had special classes for the slow and for the gifted. These programs are gone and the gifted are held back while those with issues in learning are moved along. There is no recognition anymore of special education requirements for kids with learning disabilities, they just lower the bar. Same goes for gifted students, no recognition of special needs to keep them challenged and interested. It seems school these days is all about seeing everyone as the same and the whole 'self-esteem' social program but we aren't doing anyone any favors. Recognizing the differences and catering to them is far more productive and will reduce the culture shock when they hit the real world and have to either perform up to specific levels or get fired.
