Heard about this OS from another member. It is still in the construction phase but may be a promising alternative to Macrohard.
Have a look at their site, post your reactions.

What is ReactOS?

ReactOS is a free and open-sourced operating system based on the Windows architecture, providing support for existing applications and drivers, and an alternative to the current dominant consumer operating system.

Looks to be an interesting project. I would considering installing it as VM image and see what it can do. Without support for NTFS & DirectX, it seems kind of limited though.

They appear to want to be like Windows, but better. Depending how close they get, they could also spend a good deal of time in court. There are quite a few emulators out there, Wine etc., that almost make Linux into Windows.............but not quite. ......I guess we'll see.

I read a bit about ReactOS, what they have done is coded a Win32 compatible kernal from the ground up, utilizing a lot of code from the Wine project. So you basically have a Frankenstein- Windows 98 clone it looks like.

No OS will really offer a solid competition to windows until someone sits down, stops just trying to repackage linux, and writes a competing OS.

Microsoft has a monopoly of laziness.

If you just keep rehashing Linux you won't be able to fund the constant updating and upgrading seen in windows.

Now don't get me wrong, Windows is a horrid example..but since no one else wants to step up, its the ONLY example.

If linux ever did knock out Microsoft it would be a sad day for the computer lover in us, large portions of the tune up Linux has gotten as of late has been from large corporations like IBM trying to swipe MS out at the knees, once MS is done, the need to keep investing dies, Linux will return to its previous snail pace. We lose.

We need a real competitor.

You are absolutely right about that.

If it wasn't for windows, I would not be here on the internet. That book,"Windows for Dummies" was written for me. It must be almost twenty years ago that our son dragged us kicking and screaming into computers. He put together a 486 something or other computer for us and came up with a little box of seven floppies that contained Windows 3.1. I've since bought Windows 95, 98, and XP, and a half dozen new computers. I'm not that happy that XP cost me $250.00 or that Gates is now worth close to a hundred billion dollars. If nobody invents an OS that truly competes with Windows, I'll still be there when the time comes, standing in line with my money, to get Windows 2500

I tried out ReactOS on VirtualPC for my Mac. It was one the crappiest OSes I've ever tried. I started it up and I opened up the control panel to get a look and the damn thing blue screened me. In the trash it went. Mac OS X is still the best OS if you ask me.

Behold I've created a wheel!

Most people use Windows because that is what they have grown up with figuratively speaking. All the infrastructure is in place for Microsoft and there is already a huge developer base.

No one is going to write a new OS and have that roll out with all the out of the box abilities as Microsoft nor the compatibilities nor the access to as many programs written for it. And this has always been Macs drawback. That and you need to be a little bit dumber to enjoy a Mac.
:D

While there will surely be a few disgruntled people who will switch to anything that isn't Windows, the vast majority of computer users around the world are going to use Windows regardless of how many programs come along that are "just as easy to use" or "technically better than".

The only thing that will unseat the king of the OS is something that is way easier to use, far more stable across the board, every bit as comprehensive as Windows and ultimately cheaper. Without that combination there is little more than a slightly interesting sideshow going on while the next upgrade rolls out.
