New Moderator

I am delighted to announce that we have a new moderator ... #Juan.

Juan has graciously has agreed to step into the position. Congrats, Juan, and thanks so much for being willing to do a job that requires time and patience but where the pay really sucks!

When the previous Board of Directors was formed, it was decided that Board members could not moderate. I made a formal proposition to the new Board as follows:

The solution, in my opinion, is to make an amendment to the rule about moderators not sitting on the BoD. Because the Chair votes only in the event of a tie, it would not influence Board decisions unduly if the Chair were allowed to moderate. As it stands, the BoD accepts input from moderators anyway.

Having Juan do both positions (as he has graciously agreed if the rules permit) would be yet another step toward empowering the BoD. You'd have someone "in the trenches", someone with access to the moderator thread (we have our own thread), and someone who can fully appreciate both sides of any potential issues.

As it stands, the BoD is somewhat separate from the moderators. I do think this link would be beneficial to all involved. That we have an chance to test drive until next election seems to be most opportune. Although appointment of moderators is the sole responsibility of admin (and shall remain so), I would not go against a Board ruling that the current rules stand.

Be aware, though, that I have been speaking to people and searching for mods for a couple of weeks and haven't yet found anyone (with the exception of approaching one other long time member) who is willing to take on the responsibility. I am waiting for an answer from that member, but she is extremely busy in her personal life atm. Canucklehead is going offline tonight and will remain so for nearly a week. I must have someone instated soon.

I would propose that the present rule disqualifying Board of Directors from being moderators be suspended, for the Chair position only, for the duration of this election.

Note: Italics indicate wording slightly changed here from the original proposal to provide anonymity for any proposed mods and for brevity ... I am wordy!

It was voted on by the entire Board of Directors (excluding Juan) and was unanimously accepted.

For those who don't know how the system works, moderators and the Board of Directors have been two entirely separate entities, although mods have access to the BoD thread and are invited to give input on any issues. BoD does not have access to mod thread where we discuss issues pertinent to moderating. The only time we bother the BoD is when we cannot reach a consensus among ourselves or when there is a formal complaint or dispute about our actions or any bans we impose.

Mods do not vote and are bound by BoD decisions. Administration (Andem and I) do have the right to overrule any BoD decisions as we see fit since our purview is the entire Canadian Content site and not just the forum section.
