Man shot dead by UK police not connected to bombs

Police acknowledged on Saturday the man they shot dead on Friday was not connected to bomb attacks on the British capital the previous day, calling the shooting tragic and regrettable.

"We are now satisfied that he was not connected with the incidents of Thursday 21st July 2005," police said in a statement.

"For somebody to lose their life in such circumstances is a tragedy and one that the Metropolitan Police Service regrets," the police said.

Police hunting four men who tried to bomb London's transport system on Thursday -- two weeks after suicide bombers killed 52 commuters -- shot dead the man who had been under surveillance and refused orders to halt.

The killing at point-blank range with five shots to the head in front of shocked passengers on a packed underground train triggered speculation that traditionally unarmed British police had radically changed their iron-fist-in-velvet-glove approach.

"The man emerged from a block of flats in the Stockwell area that were under police surveillance as part of the investigation into the incidents on Thursday 21st July.

"He was then followed by surveillance officers to the underground station. His clothing and behavior added to their suspicions," the statement said.

It added that the circumstances that led to the man's death were being investigated.

It is truly sad.

It is indeed truly sad that someone innocent had to lose their life in such a manner. Unfortunately, many more people will waslk with caution, hoping that the same thing will not happen to them. Mass regional hysteria will probably ensue, as well as an outcry for justice of the wronged fallend man, and with good reason.

However, this is exactly what the bad guys want. Notice that I said the bad guys. It is strange to hear that they had to shoot him 5 times in the head. Are they silencing him or what?

apparently, the "rational" for "shoot to kill" lies in : an injured "terrorist" is still dangerous and can still set off explosions. This is what was reported on BBC last evening.

but regardless how one wants to spin this.......it was still overkill.----and the victim was not connected to any of the bombings.

not good. (outrageous)

In a seemingly innocuous article in the British newspaper Cambridge Evening News, 32 year-old dance instructor Bruce Lait, in an interview from his hospital bed, said that ""The policeman said 'mind that hole, that's where the bomb was'. The metal was pushed upwards as if the bomb was underneath the train. They seem to think the bomb was left in a bag, but I don't remember anybody being where the bomb was, or any bag."

Unless the bullet goes directly into the brain,a terrorist can still detonate the explosives. They must of believed he had a bomb vest on under that heavy coat.

I agree. But it doesn't say that you need 5 bullets directly into the brain. One is plenty.

that is the premise they were working with. At the moment "they" are reviewing this policy in London.

Suspected London bombers 'dopey,' former Scotland Yard officer says:

"They were so unprofessional," and not at all like the religious militants found in the Middle East, John O'Connor told CBC-TV News.

The four, who he said drank, smoked dope and womanized, in contrast with the austere life of religiously motivated attackers, were susceptible to suggestion by their recruiters.

If this is true, then what motivated them to kill themselves????
