I don't see why Christians should be so fearful of the theory of evolution. Would it not be possible for Christians to simply accept the Bible as teaching spiritual truths and in no way intended as a science textbook or thesis?
Not all Christians are, Machjo. It is only Fundamentalist Christians who have problem with evolution, mainline churches do not.
I agree. Fundamentalists are so insistent on the literal interpretation of the text that they miss any possible deeper meaning, leading to nothing more than superstition at best, and but the most superficial and often even erroneous understanding of their sacred texts. A willingness to at least try to reconcile religious with science might be scary as it might force some Christians to re-evaluate long-held interpretations of the Bible as they attempt to read into the symbolic meaning thereof, often having to acknowledge that they might not understand all of it. For those who insist on understanding everything, that sense of never knowing it all and always having to read it again for an ever deeper understanding would likely be quite scary. This woudl also mean that every time a new scientific discovery is made, they may have to admit to another misunderstanding of their texts, having to re-evaluate them again and again.
The good news for those christians willing to go on that journey though is that though they'd have to admit ignorance of much of the texts (which literealists feel no need to admit), their understanding would be deeper overall and they could also enjoy another of God's creations to the fullest, and that is the physical universe as defined by science.
