Well...I'm not saying action shouldn't be taken against the people doing this stuff....but, is shooting people really the answer?
You're 80 something, half asleep when you hear someone breaking in, you know the cops take a half hour on average to get anywhere, you also know that other retirees have died as a result of "home-invasion" beatings, you have a shotgun or a handgun, etc. Perhaps the perp can't see your shotgun or doesn't think you'll use it and won't stop advancing.
That's just one possibility. There are more. One old guy actually got a swing at a perp with a chair but it was too late for his wife.

Most 80 year olds can't even drive...and you want to arm them?? :)

Oh man, that was so ageist...I feel bad now...I'm going to heck!

My Ma was 84 when she decided that we should chauffer her around. She was a lot better driver than other drivers around here. But, better a guy who can't shoot straight than a dead guy and a live perp.

lol. Yeah, eh? Shame on you. ;)

Unless that guy who can't shoot straight ends up putting a bullet in someone else, like his wife, or child, or a neighbour, or a cop, or something. That would be bad...no?

I always wondered how a shootout would go in a house. As far as I know it is not like the movies where you can hide behind a wall. I know you can't hide behind a car door. I don't know if a house wall would save you either. Anyway, the key when robbing a house where castle laws exists is to have some military grade body armor.

I am fairly certain if I owned a gun and someone broke into my house and I felt immediate harm coming my way, I would blast him a third eye.

It sounds like you are fairly certain you would be a good shot.
I have a steady hand... that's about all I have to my advantage. If it came to it though, I wouldn't care where the lead went, as long as I am the one walking away. I would have no qualms what so ever with shooting or physically beating a villian to death if it happened.
