The ad urges Ontarians to add their name to an NDP campaign which calls on the

Ford government to provide paid sick leave for all workers.

“Doug Ford and your MPP Kaleed Rasheed have paid sick days,” the ad says.

However, the accompanying image was not of Rasheed, the Mississauga-East Cooksville MPP, but Mississauga-Erin Mills MPP Sheref Sabawy.

“We are calling on the NDP to immediately apologize for placing a racially insensitive advertisement mistaking two of our government caucus members,” Ford’s office statement says. “We would and should expect better from the Official Opposition. Andrea Horwath owes both Mr. Sabawy and Mr. Rasheed, and frankly Ontarians, an apology.”

Asked about the ad during a media conference Wednesday, Horwath said she was not familiar with the situation.

“But I can tell you if there was any error, it was certainly not done with any malice or any kind of racial bias,” Horwath said.

Later Wednesday, NDP Provincial Director Lucy Watson said in a statement that the graphic was meant to hold to account PC MPPs who voted against paid sick days.

“One of those graphics had a mismatched name and photo, and was taken down on April 30 as a result,” Watson said. “We take responsibility for the mistake and regret any confusion it may have caused.”
