Re: Brain Williams and Media Scandals

You just gotta know that the bulk of the analysts these days are kicking back with their feet up, munching on Cheetos, reading everyone's Facebook posts, lol.

Brian Williams Backs out of Letterman Appearance — Naharnet

Embattled NBC News anchor Brian Williams is backing out of scheduled appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show" on Thursday.
That news from NBC came Sunday, a day after Williams said he was stepping away from NBC's "Nightly News" as the network looks into the anchor's admission that he had told a false story about being on helicopter hit by a grenade while reporting on the Iraq war.
Williams had spread the story of his helicopter being under attack during a previous "Late Show" interview with Letterman. He apologized for the statements on Wednesday, and NBC News launched an internal investigation Friday.

Most pundits now think this will cost Brian Williams his job, largely because the Nightly News is so competitive that it will diminish ratings and cost NBC money. It's simply blown his 'trust' factor.

From what i've heard the charge against Williams seems pretty trivial. He has not committed any of the cardinal sins of journalism.. plagiarism, concocting sources, fabricating stories, failing to provide full and objective coverage.

He has simple applied some jouranalistic licence by putting himself into stories in the first person, when they were actual facts reported by other witnesses. It doesn't really comply with journalistic ethics, but there's really no harm done. It's just a way of spiking the story with some immediacy. It happens a lot, but doesn't often become a target of 'gotcha' reporting.

now this useless little man "...was at the Brandenburg Gate the night the wall came down.”

of course he wasn't but hey.

What Williams was referring to was the demolition of the Berlin Wall in 1989, but there are now reports that he actually arrived the day after the wall came down.

Williams’ predecessor Tom Brokaw was the only American anchorman to report live from the scene on that historic day.
