The Union Jack by the way is an amalgamation of the Cross of St. Andrew for Scotland, the Cross of St. Patrick for Northern Ireland and the Cross of St. George for England.

The Cross of St Patrick - a red diagonal cross on a white background - is the flag of the whole of the island of Ireland but when what is now the Republic of Ireland seceded from the Union in 1922 (to suddenly and annoyingly make the land area of our country become smaller than Poland and Italy) we just couldn't be bothered changing the flag.
