A local council decided against flying the flag of St George after concerns were raised that it would offend the town’s 16 Muslim residents.


Eleanor Jackson, a university lecturer, said the red and white symbol could cause upset in Radstock, Somerset, because it was used during the Crusades 1,000 years ago.

The Labour councillor voiced her concerns at a meeting called to discuss which flag should be purchased to fly atop the town's repaired civic flagpole.

She said: “My big problem is that it is offensive to some Muslims, but even more so that it has been hijacked by the far right.

"My thoughts are we ought to drop it for 20 years."

Radstock Town Council, which serves a local population of more than 5,600 residents, eventually decided to purchase a Union flag to fly on Armistice Day.

Just more of the anti-English bigotry that we've come to expect from the British ruling classes. The British ruling classes hate the English and all English symbols. They would never even think about banning the Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish flags. And that's why the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish have been given their own parliaments or assemblies but the English haven't. Instead they continue to allow Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish MPs in the British Parliament at Westminster to have a say and a vote on England-only matters whilst, due to the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish having their own parliament or assemblies (unlike England) banning the English from having a say in Scottish-only, Welsh-only or Northern Irish-only matters.

....a symbol used a thousand years ago is still "offensive" today but in another 20 years it'll be fine??? Does over reacting expire in 1020 years? Is that the shelf life?

The Muslim issue was an excuse. You cannot understand the whole thrust of New Age political correctness unless you see that it is a vicious onslaught on Christianity and all of its symbols.

Because whenever we in Britain try to move away from any of the three "mainstream" parties (with their pandering to minorities and extreme political correctness - even the Tories - there's nothing mainstream about them) and start voting for parties which seem more sensible and less PC and left-wing, like UKIP, we are immediately called "far right racists" by the press and by the left.

A perfect example of all this was during the 2010 General Election. The then Prime Minister Gordon Brown - the head of a Labour Party which was a big advocate of uncontrolled and unrestricted immigration into Britain during its 13 years in power - was on the campaign trail in Rochdale. An elderly woman called Gillian Duffy, who was a lifelong Labour supporter, came up to him in the street and asked what his party's going to do about the problem of immigration. After spending a while not giving her a proper answer, he then got back in his car and was driven away. However, he had forgotten to take his little microphone off his jacket and he was overheard telling someone else in the car that the lady he had spoken to was a "bigoted woman". This became big national news and it played a big part in throwing Brown and the Labour Party out of power and bringing in a Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government (Britain's first coalition government since WWII and the first time the Liberals have been in power since WWII). The British people had found out what the Labour Party REALLY thinks about anyone who dares question their policy of uncontrolled immigration, and the elderly lady who Brown called "that bigoted woman" decided not to vote for Labour in that election after voting for them for decades.

St. George was a Roman soldier and convert.. who was martyred in the Diocletian persecution of 303.. which demanded compliance of the 'cult' of Christianity to Roman worship and social mores (as with pc today).. so he's used to this type of persecution.

St George is not only the patron saint of England but he's also the patron saint of Georgia, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia, as well as the cities of Genoa, Amersfoort, Beirut, Botoşani, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Timişoara, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg im Breisgau, Kragujevac, Kumanovo, Ljubljana, Pérouges, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lod, Lviv, Barcelona, Moscow and Victoria, as well as of the Scout Movement.

He is also the patron saint of skin disease sufferers, syphilitic people and the Romani, who celebrate his day named Ederlezi at the night from 5 to 6 May.

In England, St George's Day is celebrated every 23 April.

As for the so-called far right — about 10 people and a dog — this would be like removing the Canadian flag because a white supremacist in his mom’s basement puts it on his website.

The rainbow flag of the gay community is still to be flown by this particular council, of course, and Islamic festivals are to be properly commemorated, but the flag known by men who died fighting the Nazis and one that represents nation, tolerance, democracy and decency is to disappear.

To their credit, several Muslim leaders have described the action as absurd and extreme, which is a welcome departure as similar flags have been taken down from police stations and public buildings due to Islamic complaints.

St. George is not only the patron saint of England and many other countries and communities.. but most notably he is the Patron Saint of Soldiers. So not only has the Council managed to insult England.. but all who fought and died for her as well.

The Union Jack by the way is an amalgamation of the Cross of St. Andrew for Scotland, the Cross of St. Patrick for Northern Ireland and the Cross of St. George for England. For the sake of consistency the good Council of Radstock should ban the Union Jack as well.. as a triple insult of Muslims.. or atheists.. or Buddhists or whatever.

Maybe white on white would work.. but black people might be offended.. black on black?.. well so it goes ..ad absurdum... ad nauseum. :roll:
