I have been using Vista for close to 2 years and it works fine for me. The OS had some nasty issues at launch but they have been fixed more or less.

While parts of the video are funny, most of it is based on inaccurate information or outright BS.

Bloat is the biggest issue I have with Vista, a fresh install of Vista 64 eats up close to 10gb on my pc.

My wife just bought a new computer. It came complete with Windows Vista but for some strange reason it is Vista 32 bit. One of her pieces of hardware is an Epson 1660 scanner and she still hasn't found a driver for that scanner. All kinds of drivers for 64 bit but so far no luck with 64 bit. The soft ware that came with the five year old scanner just will not install. Microsoft sucks? My wife has come up with a few stronger terms.

The only reason you would need the 64 bit version is if you plan on utilizing more then 4gb of RAM. As is, a 32 bit OS can address about 3.2-3.5gb of RAM.

Juan, you can download the 32bit driver for your wife's PC from here:
ftp://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson12242.exe

I have Windows XP, I haven’t looked at Vista. Does anybody know if Vista still has a DOS platform?

I have many DOS programs (which I wrote) which I still use. Windows XP has an excellent DOS platform, the program written as far back as 1992 run fine on the DOS platform.

If they don’t have a DOS platform, no way I am switching to Vista, even if I buy a new computer.

With Vista 32bit, you should be able to run most of your DOS programs. With Vista64, 16 bit support has been removed entirely from what I understand.

more info here: Some 16-bit DOS-based Programs and the Command Prompt will not run in full-screen mode in Windows Vista

Thanks Durka. I think we've been there already but we'll give it another go. It's funny that I'm running 64bit XP and my wife's Vista is 32bit. Why do I get the feeling that this whole situation was designed to get Bill Gates another billion or three in his checking account.....?

I have six machines and just one is a Vista machine. I have had no problems at all. The bloat factor is an issue but if your getting a new machine why would you get 512mb of ram and crap. My machine is a dual core 3 gig set up and it's fast, even with the 'Aero' display. You can turn that off BTW. Just like XP. I put that on an old PII 400mhz machine with 256 meg of ram. Had to go to classic style, read looks like windows 98, to save on memory. All in all it is deja vu all over again with Vista.

Sorry folks it's the march of time.

Oh, and Mac won't help you either. Six of one, half dozen of the other. ;-)

Not sure what you mean by that but if you are switching to MAC from PC you will need all new drivers for sure. It is a completely different type of OS. The hardest part most PC users have with switching is that they keep giving their Mac PC commands and wonder why it locks up on them or does nothing at all.

Ha ha, this is funny, from the above link from loon:

.....I've used both mac's and pc's for years and the only reason I went with a pc was the cost factor. Unfortunately I purchased a laptop this year that was a rather beefy system (duel core amd 64 bit processor, 1 gig of ram...ect), but it came pre-loaded with vista. Suffice to say that it took anywhere from 5-10 minutes to load the os, and then I found that just the os (with no other programs running) would use almost half of my RAM to run.......

Oh boo hoo princess.... you got a gig and it takes half of it? Cry me a river, it's called upgrading you cheap bastach...... most computers, including laptops have been getting souped up decently with 1.5 to 2 gigs these days..... frig even Macs.

And if the laptop is so slow to load up and actually takes that long to boot up..... STOP DOWNLOADING PORN OFF THOSE STUPID CORRUPT WEB SITES YOU VISIT FROM A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR FREE PORN!!!!!

And while you're at it, clean the spyware off your system and get a decent anti virus you dumb Mac head.

I got Vista on my new system, and it runs pretty damn sweet with no issues except for my video card needing to be updated..... whoopie doo...

If you want a system that you don't have to know anything about and act like a monkey when it crashes because it doesn't explain or ever fix what's doing it..... get a mac..... I'm sure the one button mouse will be nice and simple enough for those who don't know anything about computers (No offense loon, I'm just ranting in general now :p )

But anyways, for the record, Vista has been working just fine for me.

I'm currently on a friends' PC that he wanted to have reformatted and it's running on XP Pro. Now I used to use XP Pro since it basically came out, but here I am, in Service Pack 1, waiting for the damn thing to update, and using the old explorer that doesn't have the tabs.......

Do you all remember what it was like when you had to have a bunch of windows open for different things? (Or just visit a page at a time?)

Man, All I can say is that some people just take things for granted sometimes..... Vista compared to what I'm using right now...... my hell, stab me in the eye please!

(Praxius would like to take a moment to officially state that he or any party related or known to Praxius does not condone the act of violence against Praxius, including stabbing in the eye with any projectile or blunt object. Remember, Stay in School and Don't do Drugs.)

Oh yeah and I have worked on several Macs since grade 10 with the power macs, and every single one of them couldn't keep up to speed with what I wanted to do compared to a PC...... and every single one of them crashed on multiple occasions with no explinations..... and I lost a crap load of work.

For 13-14 or so years of using macs on and off (and I learned a lot about how they work and what I couldn't do to fix things) I have lost complete trust on those computers.

And their price? Screw that. Not for their reliability.

More stable and faster then PCs? Maybe back in 1996..... In college we put a PC and a Mac side by side, both with the same model video cards, same CPUs, RAM, etc. We made it run a few photoshop actions to see which one would be faster. The mac won by about 2 seconds..... whoopie.

Now a days, it's about par. And When a Mac Crashes.....that's it. When a PC Crashes or freezes, you can get it dealt with before you have to shut down, and keep on working.

Macs sure do make good looking fishbowels, but sure not good for much more then word processing and the internet.

Well, 64 bit is the way of the future. pretty much any factory shipped pc comes with vista64 these days.

Also, if you have an OEM license for Vista32, it will work for Vista64 as well.

You can run a minimal distribution of Linux on pretty much anything.

I dual boot Ubuntu and XP, and the only reason I keep XP is because I like to play games sometimes...WIne works well for most games, but not all that I play.

I have a lot of desktop effects enabled that are just so wicked compared to Vista...

The only problem I'm having is there is limited support for my video card, so any time I update the kernel, I have to recompile my video drivers...which is where I'm at right now...I'm hoping that this will be addressed with Intrepid...

At any rate, Linux is the OS of choice for the discerning computer user.

:lol:18 posts!! All I expected was maybe one or two chuckles, like Zan's. loll.;-)

My son showed me the video while he came by to do some upgrades on my computer. Right away I decided to share it with you on the forum as something funny.

Am glad so many "experts" exchanged their knowledge and experiences with each other.
I'm so impressed!
