Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday ordered jails to comply with federal requests to detain immigrants, citing President Donald Trump’s executive order earlier this week cracking down on “sanctuary cities.”
The move was a victory for Mr. Trump, who rolled out numerous policies this week aimed at fighting illegal immigration, including penalizing cities that protect undocumented immigrants in defiance of the federal government. He celebrated the decision in a tweet on Thursday, writing, “Miami-Dade Mayor drops sanctuary policy. Right decision. Strong!”
Though Miami-Dade officials had resisted labeling the county a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants, a 2013 resolution by the county commission resulted in Miami-Dade refusing to indefinitely detain illegal immigrants wanted by federal immigration authorities without reimbursement. As a result, the administration of President Barack Obama designated Miami-Dade a sanctuary county in 2016—a move the county challenged.
