And had he been non-white the police would have kept his identity a secret, like they did when little Emily Jones had her head sliced off by a female illegal immigrant in a Bolton park a year ago, when the murderer's identity wasn't revealed until after she was found guilty.

LONDON – A British police officer has pleaded guilty to the rape and kidnapping of 33-year-old Sarah Everard who went missing while walking home in London earlier this year. One week after she vanished, her body was found in a bag in woodland in the county of Kent.

In March, police officer Wayne Couzens, who joined the Metropolitan police force in 2018, was charged with Everard’s kidnap and murder. On Tuesday he admitted to kidnapping Everard “unlawfully and by force or fraud” and raping the marketing executive. He did not enter a plea for her murder, but those gathered in court heard that he had accepted responsibility for her death.

Everard’s devastated family paid tribute to her in March, describing her as “bright and beautiful,” “thoughtful” and “dependable.”

Following her disappearance, Britons united in outrage and grief, took to the streets and social media to share their own accounts of assault and to demand change. At a vigil organized to pay tribute to the marketing executive earlier this year, London’s Metropolitan Police force was widely condemned as officers used force to break apart groups of mourners.

At the time, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said the gathering had been “unlawful” citing coronavirus concerns.

Photos of officers arresting women and pinning others to the ground triggered further calls for better protection for women. Angry mourners who had gathered to pay their respects to Everard were stunned at the use of force, with some chanting “arrest your own” toward officers.

Days before Everard vanished, Couzens was accused of exposing himself in a London restaurant.

Research published earlier this year from U.N. Women United Kingdom shows that at least 97% of British women aged between 18 and 24 have experienced sexual harassment in public.

LONDON — A police officer was jailed for life on Thursday for abducting marketing executive Sarah Everard on a London street as she walked home from a friend’s house then raping and murdering her in a case that shocked Britain and stirred protests over violence against women.

Wayne Couzens, 48, a serving London officer who had guarded diplomatic premises, had used his position to stop Everard, the Old Bailey court heard.

Couzens forced Everard, 33, into a hire car as she walked home after visiting a friend in south London on March 3. Her body was found in woodland around 50 miles (80 km) away in southeast England. A post-mortem concluded she had died as a result of compression of the neck.

His whole life sentence means he has no chance of parole.

“Nothing can make things better, nothing can bring Sarah back, but knowing he will be imprisoned forever brings some relief,” Everard’s family said in a statement.

“Wayne Couzens held a position of trust as a police officer and we are outraged and sickened that he abused this trust in order to lure Sarah to her death.”

The murder prompted public rallies and outpourings of anger from women who have recounted their own experiences and fears of being out alone at night.

One witness saw Everard being handcuffed before her abduction and police investigating the case said he may have used COVID-19 protocols as an excuse to falsely arrest her before killing her.

Judge Adrian Fulford said Couzens had long planned a violent sexual assault on a yet-to-be-selected victim who he intended to coerce into his custody.

“I have not the slightest doubt that the defendant used his position as a police officer to coerce her on a wholly false pretext into the car he had hired for this purpose,” Fulford said in sentencing remarks.

The Metropolitan Police Force, which investigated the murder and for whom Couzens worked, said it was “sickened, angered and devastated” by his crimes. Commissioner Cressida Dick has apologized to Everard’s family.

“Our police are there to protect us – and I know that officers will share in our shock and devastation at the total betrayal of this duty,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

“People must be able to walk on our streets without fear of harm and with full confidence that the police are there to keep them safe.”

Britain’s police watchdog is looking into police failures to investigate an indecent exposure incident linked to Couzens in 2015, and two further such allegations in February this year.

Opposition lawmaker Harriet Harman called on Dick to resign.

“Sarah Everard was simply walking home. Women must be able to trust the police not fear them. Women’s confidence in police will have been shattered,” Harman said on Twitter.

LONDON — A former London police officer, who was jailed for life in 2021 for raping and murdering Sarah Everard in a case that shocked Britain, has been sentenced to 19 months in prison for exposing himself in incidents which took place before that attack.

Wayne Couzens, 50, pleaded guilty last month to three charges of exposing himself, two of which happened less than a month before he attacked Everard. His whole life sentence for her murder already meant he had no chance of parole.

“Couzens repeatedly targeted women to expose himself to on multiple occasions. These offenses were abhorrent and caused great distress and discomfort for the victims,” Rosemary Ainslie, Head of the Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime Division, said in a statement.

“It is right that he has been prosecuted for these offenses, and that he will continue to spend the rest of his life in prison.”

The first offense involved Couzens exposing himself to a cyclist in an isolated country lane in November 2020. He then exposed himself to workers at a McDonald’s drive-through restaurant on two occasions in February 2021.

Couzens, whose job was to guard diplomatic premises, abducted 33-year-old marketing executive Everard on a London street as she walked home from visiting a friend in March 2021, using his police credentials to force her into his car.

Her body was later found in woodland about 50 miles (80 km) away in southeast England.

London’s Metropolitan Police has been plunged crisis after a series of scandals in recent years including the conviction of David Carrick, 48, who admitted carrying out 24 counts of rape over almost two decades while serving as a police officer.

In January, London Commissioner Mark Rowley said hundreds of officers were likely to be sacked for sexual and domestic abuse offenses as the capital’s police force seeks to regain public trust.

Following Monday’s sentencing, the Independent Office for Police Conduct published its investigation into racist, sexist and homophobic messages exchanged by police officers on a Whatsapp group in 2019 that Couzens was part of.

It said two former Met officers had been convicted of offenses in relation to the messages and received prison sentences, and four other serving or former officers had been dismissed and barred from policing.
