A massive sinkhole that cracked open on a farm in central Mexico is threatening to swallow a nearby house.

The rapidly expanding hole was first discovered in a rural area of Santa Maria Zacatepec, in Puebla state, on Saturday.

According to Agence France-Presse, a family living near the sinkhole made the find after hearing a loud crash, which they mistook for a lightning strike.

At the time, it measured nearly five metres (16 feet) in diameter. By Tuesday, it grew to close to 91 metres (300 feet) and was inching dangerously closer to the home.

The hole, which was mostly filled with water, was around 20 metres (65 feet) deep, state Gov. Miguel Barbosa Huerta told a press conference Monday.

Barbosa said the family near the sinkhole has been relocated and that no one was injured.

Officials are investigating possible causes of the massive hole, including a geological fault or variations in the soil’s water content.
