TURLOCK, Calif. -- A 27-year-old man was fatally shot by police as he kicked, punched and stomped a young toddler to death in front of horrified motorists who tried to stop the attack on a dark country road.

Investigators on Sunday were trying to establish the relationship between the suspect and the child they say he killed Saturday night.

The Stanislaus County coroner said the boy appeared to be about 18 months old based on his size, according to county sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh.

"It's been a long night of wondering, 'Why?' -- not only for the officers and the passers-by who stopped and tried to help out, but for anyone. Why would somebody do this?'' Singh said.

Singh said the coroner doesn't plan to confirm the identities of the suspect and victim until Monday. Because his injuries were so severe, the child will have to be identified through a blood or DNA test, he said.

The suspect had a child's car seat in the back of his four-door pickup truck.

The truck caught the attention of an elderly couple at 10:13 p.m. Saturday because it was stopped in the two-lane road facing the wrong direction, Singh said.

As they got closer, the couple saw the man brutally beating the toddler behind his truck and throwing the child on the ground, according to Singh.

Two or three other cars stopped, an unusual number to be passing through the remote area surrounded by a dairy, a cow pasture, a cornfield and a farmhouse, he said.

"What we got from witnesses is he was punching, slapping, kicking, stomping, shaking,'' Singh said. "They tried to intervene and get involved, but their efforts really didn't have an effect.

"The suspect was engaged in what he was doing. He just pushed them off and went back to it.''

A sheriff's helicopter responding to emergency calls from the area landed in a cow pasture at 10:19 p.m. carrying a Modesto police officer who shot the man to death after he refused an order to stop beating the child.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the toddler, who was not breathing when they arrived. The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No children within the dead boy's age range have been reported kidnapped or missing in Stanislaus County, Singh said.

The incident happened on Bradbury Road about 18 kilometres west of Turlock, a city about halfway between Sacramento and Fresno.

Was gonna post this one this morning. But I thought it was just too depressing to kick off the week with.

Too bad the cops didn't get him before he killed that poor little boy.

Oh, well my Monday has been pretty crappy so far, so I guess it suits that I post it to ruin everybody's day.

Too bad the cops didn't get him before he killed that poor little boy.

This to me is just another example why I think some people should have their testicles detached prior to spawning children.

I just don't get how a group of people couldn't stop him. Seriously.

Well based on the report, the first on the scene were two elderly couple, which generally speaking, they probably didn't have the health and/or strength to keep him away from the child.

From the article:

"What we got from witnesses is he was punching, slapping, kicking, stomping, shaking,'' Singh said. "They tried to intervene and get involved, but their efforts really didn't have an effect.

"The suspect was engaged in what he was doing. He just pushed them off and went back to it.''

From what I gather, the guy went pretty nutz in a testosterone filled black-out rage and was driven to finish his objective, which I can only assume was due to a long extended buildup of frustrations and stress relating to the child with no healthy outlet or counseling.

From my imagination and knowlege of human behavior, I would safely say that the man (I suspect was the father) was on a long trip with the child, the child was crying/screaming continually for a long period of time, he either did not have the food or changing supplies with him to quell the crying (Or the child just continually cries regardless of getting what they wanted) and then after so long, he snapped and just wanted to silence the noise once and for all.

I'm not saying it's right, nor can I relate in anyway to that situation, but it's not the first time I have heard of this type of thing happening..... and probably won't be the last.

Myself, if I had to deal with a long drive with a child screaming and crying, if I couldn't solve the problem with food/milk or changing, etc.... then I would have pulled over on the side of the road and walked a few feet away to have a smoke and clear my head.... with any luck the child would cry itself to sleep shortly after. If not.... then I'd have to take it a step at a time to solve the problem.

I'm just surprised that no one hit him with a tire iron or something. Surely they would have realized that they would not have gotten in any trouble with the law as they were just trying to defend the baby.:-(

I don't imagine it would take very long for the man to kick, punch, and stomp the baby to death. So perhaps enough people couldn't get to him in time.
It's bloody sad. Reaffirms my belief that thewre should be some sort of qualification procedure to go through before having kids.

They stood around watching it long enough for the chopper to arrive, and an officer to shoot him. That's a LONG time. Think about standing there, enduring that spectacle, for that length of time.

Everyone was talking about this one at work today. It's just sick. I'd like to point out, they haven't even said if the man was the child's father or not. Quite often, the abuse cases we see involve mom's boyfriend. Whoever he was, he's sick. I work with babies day in and day out. Some of them drive me to consider getting a tubal ligation they're so hard to deal with. I can almost understand someone losing their temper and shaking a baby once. This went WAY beyond that. This was an evil man.

In some ways I'm glad I had a kid later in life. Even at my kid's worst I don't get angry.

I'm glad he's dead.:-|anyone who did what he did is worse than scum, and I would check
his background and see how many other people/children/babies he has abused.
