My reference to Castro was meant to be "tongue in cheak", nothing more, although you can't deny Castro is one of a h*** of an orator, obviously, not always with the right message.
.
Castro,I admire, for sticking it to the USA for over 40 years.Nobody else has ever done this!

There are still sanctions against Cuba because the ex-pat Cuban community in Florida ensured Bush (pres) and Bush (gov of FLA) their election wins.

The Ex-pat Cubans of S. Florida have been a political force for years and keep the animosity stirred up. The sanctions would have probably been lifted in the 90's under Clinton but for the "Hermanos al Rescate" incident which set back relations! (As if they could be set back?) It seems that some ex-pats out of Florida were flying Air Planes (private stuff, single engine) over Havana and dumping leaflets. It seems that when the Cuban Air Force found enough fuel for a mig, they chased these jokers back across the the straits and shot them down! One of the Cuban Pilots was caught remarking about, "yo tengo cojones" when he shot down an unarmed plane! To top it off, the planes went down near a cruise ship and the whole thing was caught on tape!

Bush has quieltly lifted some of the embargo, specifically aimed at shipping medical and food stuffs to Cuba. Several ships depart New Orleans for Havana loaded with supplies, usually once a month in Cuban Ships! As far a visiting the island, family visits are allowed and a Federal Judge has blocked the US from enforcing its no travel rules. (Civil Penaties are all that is allowed now and that is blocked) So it may be over in the next few years, who knows. Bush and his cronies opened up China, so Cuba is a possibility, where there is $$$$ there is a way.

Bush has quieltly lifted some of the embargo.

You would think that there would be more coverage about something like that. Why would he be doing it quietly?

Peapod, it is easier to cook a frog by putting him in water and putting the water on the stove only raising the temprature slowly than to risk having him jump out a boiling pot! One degree at a time is easier than a shock treatment!

The US Govt is doing that to allow exports of farm products and humanitarian items quietly to create and counter the effects of closed markets. The Republicans are generally businessmen and women who see making a buck as their purpose in life. The political stance of the embargo was set up under JF Kennedy and the democrats then in power! The Republicans see a $ to be made, they will make it. Remember, Bush, Sr. opened up China as the first Ambassador!

Slowly and surely, the Cuban embargo will drift away until Mr. Castro will be dining at the White House and toasting the trade agreeemt!

Mr. Bush comes from a long line of Yankee Traders and Merchants, its only natural to try to sell something!
