Layton slams Liberals for racist taunts against his wife, an NDP candidate
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By KEITH LESLIE

TORONTO (CP) - A Liberal party official's posting of "racist" comments on a website, comparing Jack Layton's Chinese-born wife Olivia Chow to a dog, was "no joke," the NDP leader said Thursday.

Mike Klander, executive vice-president of the federal Liberal party's Ontario wing, stepped down Boxing Day after photographs of Chow - who is also an NDP candidate in Toronto - and a chow chow dog were posted on his blog, under the heading Separated at Birth.

"I frankly never expected that we would face such things, that a candidate would be singled out," Layton said in his first public appearance since before Christmas.

"I certainly hope racial slurs will come to an end in this campaign."

Layton noted that Europeans who controlled portions of China in the past used to hang signs that read "no dogs or Chinese allowed," and said no Chinese person familiar with their history will ever forget those signs.

"This is no joke, and I think it's a culture of arrogance that has set in ... and the election will have to deal with it," he said. "It reminds us that insults flow from arrogance. There is far too much of this in today's Liberal party."

Chow appeared with Layton later Thursday at a campaign event in the city's east Chinatown district, and said the comparisons to the dog on the Liberal website were hurtful.

"I think I was tremendously saddened," she said. "To have this kind of racial slur is humiliating. I think the true mask of the Liberal party has been taken off, and I certainly hope on Jan. 23 people will understand that it is time for a change."

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper was equally sharp.

"To see them calling Mr. Layton names, comparing his wife to an animal, this is the campaign of the Liberal party," Harper said during a campaign stop in Kelowna, B.C. "It's all fear, it's all smear.

"It's one incident of scandal and corruption after another. What this should tell all of us, the time of these guys is up."

Layton compared the web-based insult to school-yard behaviour, and said it's the same kind of discrimination many new Canadians face when they look for a job.

"That kind of attitude has no place in our country," he said. "Canada should not be governed by people who think that way."

The couple appeared to easily win over their Chinese-Canadian audience Thursday when Layton began by offering greetings in Cantonese with Chow translating into English, before he switched to English while she again translated.

Layton also won applause for saying Canada should apologize for the head tax imposed on Chinese immigrants in the late 1890s and early 1900s, and compensate those who paid the tax and their surviving families.

"We need to have a response from our government that starts with an apology - an open and complete apology to the Chinese community," he said. "That has got to be the starting place for redress."

Ottawa collected $23 million from more than 80,000 Chinese immigrants between 1885 and 1923, with the tax ranging from $50 to $500 a person.

Last month, the federal government signed a $2.5-million agreement in principle with the National Congress of Chinese Canadians and other organizations to set up educational and commemorative projects related to the head tax.

But Prime Minister Paul Martin has refused to apologize for the controversial tax.

So I guess they are bad as Conservatives if I take what Reverend's arguments truthfully, and I have no reason to doubt him so, both the Liberals and Conservatives are racist, or have racist tendencies.

Appears that the Liberals, based on the two blog sites mentioned, are the party of extremes, intolerance, bigots, and racists, and are obviously the party with the hidden agenda, which is just now become public.

The NDP noted a few years ago that the Liberal party was no longer the party of Trudeau. It truly is said to see a party which once had good intentions turn so bad. There last desperate hope is in an electoral system which is flawed and the desperate racist attacks, and pleaing ignorance to there own corruption.

If you will forgive me the emphasis....

OH BULLSHIT!!!!!

We have got to get these guys out of office. I am simply so tired of listening to this stuff about the Conservatives. I am a Conservative. I know dozens of Conservatives. They are good, upstanding people who care about their society and their nation, both the haves and the have-nots. Some people on this forum continually depict the Conservatives as some kind of monstrous cult, lusting for power, salivating at the stench of corruption to their benefit......sorry guys, that's the LIBERALS

There is only one alternative in this country, only one government-in-waiting, only one sensible way to vote. The Conservatives win, if only by default.

As I keep saying, if they are one tenth as bad as the Liberals, I will put my vote elsewhere next election.

If Mr. Klander stepped down upon the accusations, then why would this be considered a racist scandal? This was an isolated incident, and the "accused" promptly resigned; while I in no way condone, and in fact condemn his comments, I see no reason to condemn the entire party, nevermind its elected officials or candidates, for the actions of that man.

Oh, it would take a lot more than comments from one idiot to make me condemn an entire party.

-a billion dollars sloppily accounted for by the HRDC

- leaks (perhaps) from the finance dept.

-the supression of free speech at the APEC meeting

-40 million unaccounted for in the adscam scandal

-refusal of Martin to name sitting Quebec MPs that got illegal adscam money

-mob connections

-anti-terror laws befitting banana republics

-a 45 year history of continuing concentration of power in the PM's office.

-one or two billion bucks gone on the useless gun registry

-loss of the right to be free from unreasonable search in Bill C-68

-loss of the right to remain silent in Bill C-68

-refusal to ban the LTTE (Tamil Tigers), one of the deadliest terrorist groups on earth, because they control 100,000 votes in Toronto.

-destruction of the Canadian military

-a reprehensible desire to steal my handguns

-the shutdown of the Somalia inquiry

-the destruction of the Canadian Airborne Regiment

-constant, unending lies and arrogance

-refusal to acknowledge motions actually passed in Parliament

-and all the damned, nefarious actions I can't think of at 5:30 AM, but no doubt there are a lot.

THAT would make me condemn the Liberal Party, all its members, and anyone misguided enough to vote them back in.

Sorry for the tone, but I am tired, and fed up, so you are getting the raw edge of what I think.

Edited to add-

-the misuse of the RCMP in a gov't vendetta against M. Beaudoiun (sp), ex-President of the BDC

-The entire golf course/hotel affair.

-The misuse of the RCMP as a club to beat Mulroney in the Airbus investigation

And on And On And On And On

Time to put an end to it.

I'm sure I can think of some more.

Edited again to place the word "misguided" above, because Cosmo (below) is right. :)

Colpy .... I certainly understand getting fed up with the political stuff ... been there a while myself! It would be appreciated, tho, if you can find a way to express your opinions without condemning any liberal voter as a dumbass ... no matter what party each of us supports, we all figure everyone who votes for anyone else is a dumbass. No need to ruffle feather, is there?

How is comparing a person to a dog, with the same name, racist? It's in bad taste; it's stupid; it's juvenile; but racist? That's a stretch.

So now if someone posts a picture of Paul Martin, comparing him to a Martin, that would be racist as well, right?

And a picture of Harper along with someone playing a harp would be racist, too?

If you read Jack Layton's response, you will understand why it's racist. For years Chinese people were referred to as "dogs" by Europeans and North Americans. It has clear racist undertones, and the author should have known better.

It could be because he was comparing Olivia Chow's and the dogs eyes. That would make it racism.

Making fun of gays would make him a bigot.

Calling Layton an "asshole" would depict supreme arrogance.

It appears that the Liberals hidden agenda is not so hidden any more since this is not the first Liberal to make these types of remarks.

Comparing human with an animal is racism...
Like comparing a black with a monkey or a jew with a rat...

What you are doing when you say such thing is bringing the whole race to the same level as the beast.

This was used by organisation like the KKK and the Nazi in their propaganda.

Especially with putting the two pictures side by side with the title above it saying "Seperated from Birth".

I read a bit of this guy's other blogs and they seemed to be nothing more then ignorant rants about whatever goes on in his day.

- Calling Layton an A--HOLE
- Saying one of the reasons they will win the election is because their jet is better then the others.

Just petty, stupid, and deep rooted animostity that he
happened to put out into the public forum. I wonder when people will learn that these things are public and that anyone can access them.

Score 1 point for human stupidity v.s. the universe

I simply interpreted it to be a pun on her last name. But I guess you can all be offended in different ways, and if Layton can stretch it to the use of "dogs" in history, then he's more of a used car salesman than I thought.

If he was comparing her eyes, then the guys just blind. As Pete Townsend said, "all the best cowboys have Chinese eyes", and every day I look at my children, I fall in love with their almond eyes all over again.

I think the descent into racism charges on this one are absolutely ridiculous. But it is an election, so all is fair, I guess.

And don't worry, the day people make racist comments about my daughters, that'll be the day they need to buy a new nose.

I see your point, but the comments were ignorant and offensive, racist or not.

and what we see here is that people in public positions need to be careful of what they say because they do not know who the listener is going to be.

edit: colpy,
sure there are fine honest con supporters. i know of a couple myself.
unfortunately, what you have the libs and the cons are a choice of which offers in your perspective less poison more medicine. state all you want that in your opinion harper is a government in waiting. just don't get so defensive when people don't look at them with "rose coloured glasses", because those that think harper and company is a government in waiting is a MINORITY.
