Liberals issue 77 press releases in “Year of the Veteran,” but refuse to treat disabled veterans fairly
WINNIPEG – MP Bill Blaikie today called on the Liberal government to abandon plans to appeal a court decision awarding disabled war veterans and their families the unpaid interest from their pensions.

Justice John Brockenshire ruled in favour of 30,000 disabled veterans from the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and Peacekeeping missions. The veterans had not been paid interest on pension money owing to them. Lawyers for the Liberal government have indicated that the government will likely appeal. The case has already been before the courts for seven years.

“2005 was proclaimed as the Year of the Veteran – and the Liberal government issued 77 press releases saying how much they honoured the men and women who fought to keep Canada free,” Blaikie said. “And now, as the year ends, they continue to refuse to treat disabled veterans fairly.”

“If the Liberals appeal this decision, then they are making a mockery of the Year of the Veteran,” Blaikie said.

Blaikie said the Liberals should immediately instruct government lawyers to abandon plans for an appeal, and concentrate instead on paying the interest that is owed to veterans and their families.

“These veterans have waited decades for justice,” Blaikie said. “Enough is enough. Let’s just treat them fairly.”

Bill Blaikie is the MP for Elmwood-Transcona and NDP Defence Critic.

For this reason, and many others, you should vote Conservative.

The NDP have no chance of getting power, they can only hold the balance of power.

They can only force the Liberals to do so much, and this will not be one of their priorities.

Nah, in my riding at least it doesn't make sense to vote for a conservative. The NDP candidate who was elected to Parliment won by nearly 7,000 votes. That is alot to make up in 18 months. I think I will vote for the NDP. And who knows, if the conservatives get in with the NDP having balanace of power, then maybe something will be done.

That's funny.

As far as I know, the Conservative Party of Canada has never been in power.

As far as I know, they have no record.

Do you know something I don't?

The conservative/reform party has never been in power, but the old conservative party has been. And from what I remember with Nafta, didn't the U.S. propose scraping the Canadian healthcare for free trade, under the conservatives, the old conservatives.

WEll, the old and new LIberal party HAS been in power and we KNOW what their record is, so perhaps it is time for someone else to try?

Given the Libs record on health care (more money, more wait times) anyone who thinks the conservatives would be worse should give their heads a shake.

No, Nafta did not affect health care. Nafta has been in for a number of years now. Question: why are you so enamored of a health care system that is no better than 30th in the world, depending on whose study you read, and only two other countries in the entire world emulate-Cuba and North Korea? Personally, I think something better, under the conservatives, would be something to vote for. Voting for the NDP and the Libs only condemns us to more of the same old same old.

The only people who have said Harper would dismantle health care is the NDP and Liberal fibbers and fabricators.
Harper has said he would maintain one tier medicare.

Don't expect the Liberals to do whats right for the Vets. $4.6 billion is a lot of money to "waste" on a declining voters list. Just think where that slush money could be more productively spent.

Dithers must do right for Vets

"Then there is the Progressive Conservative party, the PC party, which won only 20 seats. Now, the term Progressive Conservative will immediately raise suspicions in all of your minds. It should... They were in favour of gay rights officially, officially for abortion on demand. Officially -- what else can I say about them? Officially for the entrenchment of our universal, collectivized, health-care system and multicultural policies in the constitution of the country."

- Conservative leader Stephen Harper, then vice-president of the National Citizens Coalition, in a June 1997 Montreal meeting of the Council for National Policy, a right-wing American think tank.

the reason governments fund vets is to maintain an army. it is rather hard to get people to enlist in a service that publicly shows no concern for those previously in service. Don't think that any government really thinks soldiers are anything more than fodder for their own whims. Don't expect the cons to do anything "right" for vets, but do expect them to offer enough of a carrot to lure the young into dieing needlessly in service to their narrow and shortsighted agenda.
