I am more or less a lapsed Roman Catholic as far church attendence is concerned, but I observe Lent by giving up any kind of booze from Ash Wednesday to Easter, no meat during Holy Week and nothing but water on Good Friday.

Hard core.

What I find neat is how many people who aren't religious at all, who still want to self sacrifice for Lent.

I've decided to give up only those things that I will be able to stick to so here is my partial list:

Buffalo hunting
Running naked in Stanley Park
Lawn Bowling

Well, some people still indulge on Sundays... so... will you be running naked through the park shooting buffalo and throwing your balls around? 8O

The premise is "Self sacrifice to remind one of a greater sacrifice" However, that in practice is mildly narcissistic and definitely medieval if all it accomplishes is self-satisfaction in accomplishing a goal - more or less painful - in kind but not in degree similar to self flagellation.

If the Christian message is ""Pacifism and forgiveness, brotherhood and charity" (And if it isn't it is for naught - like dust in the wind) then true lenten sacrifice is sharing with the poor, writing a letter to politicians demanding peace (Maybe joining an Easter march), seeking out and assisting the homeless, and so on.

I think you get the idea.

"Go, my sister, and sin no more."

Then I think you should inform all of us of the days of the week you intend to be running around "Beban" Park in the manner Karrie described, as soon as Lent is over.

maybe we should have a 'canadian content' nekked in the

park run.

lol

Lets see, I don't know what to give up, maybe I will 'add'
another half mile to my every other day 'walk'.
Can we add, instead of taking away?

I gave up pizza a long time ago, and reduced many other
food items, down to one cup of coffee a day, not much bread
any more, small amounts of cheese, I refuse to give up meat,
so that's it, no more reductions of food.

If I do longer walks, I will lose more weight, that makes
me feel good, just another ten pounds will do it, then
out comes the bathing suit and shorts without whining
about my body.

I just took it for granted that when I gave up the RCC for Lent one time, I gave up Lent also. I look upon the history of religious upbringing part of my youth as youthful folly and look to the future. :)

I just finished working hard on dropping my weight from 220 lbs. to 190 over the past year and it's been holding steady for a couple of months. I figure that was worth about 7 years worth of "Lents" - I'm giving up nothing! (I have nothing left to give up!)

Just the dicipline to keep that weight off permanately,
is tough, so good for you.
Most people do well 'losing' the weight, but can't keep
from putting it all back on again.
The hard work that goes into losing the access pounds is
tough, so treasure it, and don't give in to the desires
to eat poorly.

You need a good exorcism to bring you back into the flock.

I came in to add some debauchary to this thread but I see my services aren't required. :-?

On Tuesday I will be having latkes and gefilta fish but not until after sunset of course.
