The last Islamic State village has been captured, U.S. allies say, ending a self-declared caliphate that once was as big as Britain
The statelet controlled by the Islamic State has fallen after the remaining militants surrendered in the eastern Syrian village of Baghouz, according to the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces. As defeat loomed in recent months, the group has turned to sleeper cells, potentially opening a fresh chapter of insurgency across parts of Syria and Iraq.
