I hope to one day be able to exist w/o fossil fuels. I think a lot of the world's problems would dissapear if the world was less dependent on oil and gas.
But to call the US position childish becuase it won't sign on to a treaty that would further hamper it's growth, economy, and tax the citizens of the US more. Whenever one of these treaties pop up the burden is on the US and all eyes are on the US.
As the article stated, Europe has signed on to Kyoto but are not really following the treaty. Auto manufacturers have had to bring down emissions over and over in the new vehicles. We used to pay peanuts for a vehicle inspection, just a few bucks. Now we have to pay about 35 bucks a year for them.
To give China and India a pass is hypocritical and naieve. China has a booming economy and it grows larger every year. Why does such a large nation get such a pass from the Kyoto nations? To say that they will join in 2012 with confidence again shows naievety. If China does not want to join in 2012, they will not. I am sure the world community will give them an extension to appease them. China does what it wants and it does what is in the best interest of the Chinese Govt. Mark my words, China will never sign Kyoto if it adversly affect their economy and stunts, even the slightest, thier growth.
But the US is easier to attack on issues like this. The Chinese will just smile and nod their heads.
They love hustling the west... they did it at Kyoto and got off w/o a scratch or condemnation from anyone. I bet they laughed the whole way home.
