Trudeau can't see past the veil.
OTTAWA - He's been criticized by prominent Jewish groups, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair but on Wednesday Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau stood by his comments comparing a requirement for Muslim women to remove their face veils during citizenship ceremonies to Canada's rejection of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany.
Trudeau was pressed by reporters about accusing the sitting prime minister of fomenting bigotry following the weekly Liberal caucus meeting on Parliament Hill.
"I think one of the most important things that we need to remember as Canadians is how we got to where we are as a nation," Trudeau said.
"How is it that Canada is the one place on this earth that has figured out how to be strong not in spite of our differences but because of them."
The comparison was made earlier in the week during a speech Trudeau gave in Toronto.
"So we should all shudder to hear the same rhetoric that led to a ‘none is too many’ immigration policy toward Jews in the ’30s and ’40s being used today, to raise fears against Muslims today,” Trudeau said Monday.
Defending himself Wednesday morning, Trudeau doubled down on claiming the Conservatives are being anti-Muslim:
"The fact is that we are right now in a situation around security, around international terrorism that is causing fear in Canadians. And what we need from a prime minister is to allay those fears."
Trudeau said that Prime Minister Harper and his cabinet are "continually engaging" in the politics of fear:
