My point is when all is said and done, after all the **** balls are thrown at the US by Canada and nearly everyone else, it's the US that has to carry most of the weight. It's the US that lets Canada be Canada, with your social safety net and good guy image. You confiscated a grenade and we eliminate 4 pirates. You get the benefit of 4 less hijackers and the US gets singled out for more intense attacks.
That's my point.
And as far as Gitmo goes, where does Canada hold it's several hundred terrorists?

I'd say maybe we need to change Canadian law. In the meantime, the military should abide by our current laws whether they agree with them or not.

Seeing that Canada would be acting in international waters and not on its own soil (very different from the Jamaican situation), it would be wise to ensure that any change to this law be done in consultation with the international community to ensure that it complies fully with all other international agreements.

I'm not against offing unarmed pirates per se, as long as it's done in accordance with international laws, which would likely mean having to give them a trial first seeing that they were unarmed.

I'm sure of it. There was a documentary about them on tv the other night and they mentioned that. My only point was that if they weren't pirates they'd have death and starvation to look forward to. A few days after the US takes out 4 pirates, 3 with snipers, you Canadians capture a grenade and let the culprits loose. You can screech all you want, but that's what happened.
As far as the US allowing Canada to be Canada, what do you think your taxes would be if you had to pay for the real cost of your defense?? Canada spends a pittance compared to other countries with similar GDP. NATO as a group has complained that Canada doesn't spend enough on it's defense budget (Canada's budget, not Canada's part of NATO). Who do you think is going to protect you while your military takes a ridiculous one year rest after you retreat from Afghanastan. When the US auto companies fold, screw the CAW. They are American jobs anyway.

I fully agree with you there. It's not fair of Canada to depend so much on NATO. My opinion? Seeing that we're flanked by three oceans and a major trading partner, and so have no real threats anyway, we should just withdraw from NATO and NORAD altogether. That way it would put an end to the accusations that we're somehow bumming from you against an imaginary boogeyman.

You have a point about Canada's armed forces being pintsized, though. It used to be pretty hefty in the world wars. Then the Glibs decided we don't need it and whittled it to a fraction. Harpy seems to like beefing it up a little more, though. But what's the point in having a huge armed forces when your next door neighbor is more-or-less friendly to you, is paranoid as hell, rattles its saber every 2 seconds at anyone and everyone, and every other two seconds at its own shadow, will leap at the chance of going to war with someone even over trumped up excuses, etc.?
