Is Today's music watered down too much?

The music industry is in economic decline, and our society isn't turning out many musicians these days. When I took up guitar and bass as a kid I practiced 2-4 hours a day because I loved it and I had nothing else to do. Today kids have too many things to keep them occupied, and there are very few musicians that they even know. Most of what they see is karaoke or song and dance. The musicians aren't on the map.

I think Selin sings very well. I'm not sure if she has something on youtube or not, but I heard her sing somewhere. Perhaps in the video of the many musicians on the vid she did post.

lol If you don't think people these days earn their fame and fortune, I think you're listening and reading to the wrong stuff. There's a lot more competition around now than before.
Try listening to an online radio's indie music channel sometime. At least once a week I learn of a talent new to me that is impressive. But then, I am not all that choosy about the genres I listen to. I listen to almost everything from Japanese Koto drums to Australian aboriginal didgeridoo music to Nightwish, Gordon Lightfoot, Abba, Evanescence, Dean Martin, Pete Fountain, Collide, Oscar Petersen, Bach, Mozart, Ian Tyson, Waylon Jennings, Richard Wagner, Katie Melua, Ozzie Osbourne, Jesse Cook, Bond, Flamenco, Calypso, Vanessa Mae, Mannheim Steamroller, CCR, Pink Floyd, Kitaro, Nayo, The Corrs, Red Thunder, and dozens more.

but today they have computers that can correct a singers mistakes and off key issues, to make them sound fantastic, then when they perform live, they either are lip-syncing or they show how good they really are (sarcastic)..

plus with the number of recording producers out there today compared to back then.. it is so much easier to get a record deal and have songs made.. you might not sell much but you'll get 1 record at least.

on a side note,

if the Beatles had the #'s that a lot of singers and bands get today, they'd have sold billions of records, and nobody would ever even get close to thinking of catching them,

If you enjoy jazz, there's a station in Toronto that's a non-profit, the gen manager is Ross Porter, who used to do the evening jazz program on cbc radio 2. You can live stream it over the web, jazz.fm. some mornings I like to have that on at work, makes the drugery feel less onerous.

"Try Sarah Brightman. Beautiful, talented, with a fantastic voice. And ten times the output of Susan Boyle."

Sarah Brightman indeed is a great talent. It is safe to say she never tried to imitate the screechers and whiners, so she never became one, like most, if not all recent female pop "singers".

As far as output is concerned, Brightman has been around much longer than Susan Boyle.

i think that is the reason

Today kids have too many things to keep them occupied, and there are very few musicians that they even know.

i know in sudbury quite a few are musicians they just havent hit the big time yet. My ones buddy garage is a sound studio litteraly

This is an example of good music.... The lyrics are plain and simple and there is a story to go along with it. Most of the new **** coming out right now cant compare to this, unless mabye alan jackson came out with a new album...

Yeah. So how would one know that there is less talent than before then?

It's become easier to produce your own material. So? Does that say that there's less talent around?
You do have a point in that the music may seem watered down in comparison to the past, but I think it's at least just as easy to find good stuff as opposed to mediocre stuff as it was in the past.

on a side note,

Yeah. History is history. Who knows? Maybe if the Beatles had started up in 2000 instead of 1960 not as many people would like them as before.

If one limits themself to listening to strictly easy-listening, jazz, or whatever genre; stating that their favorite singer is better than anyone else is riding high on bias and low on comprehensiveness.
Like saying that Macintosh apples are best without having tried any other apple. lol
