How so? Harper is not my favourite politician of all time but I think he's been very conscious of how he plays wedge politics and the party does it well. I'm neither condeming nor condoning wedge politics, it is what it is. But it seems like he plays one group off another very well. Do you perceive him differently?

I'm watching him, haven't drawn a final conclusion yet, even if I did conclude he's an idiot socially, I don't think that should affect his job............but sadly a lot of people don't think that way................ala Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

Ah, I get ya. I'll concur that he seems, well, socially awkward at best. I think that was probably the point behind the happy video sing-a-long with the PM that we've seen. Twice now, lol.

I don't think he connects well to the "average" Canadian but then I don't really think any politician connects well to the "average" person either. I just don't perceive him, or any other leader, being specifically disconnected with a particular ethnic group. But I don't belong to an ethnic group, so maybe my perception is off on that, I don't know.

Who is doing the perceiving and who is saying that it is a 'trait', JLM?

This thread is more about my asking questions than stating opinions. He was making comments about one of the ethnic ridings near Toronto and I just picked up that he was phrasing things about ethnic groups differently than I would if I was trying to win their favour. I would characterize the "exercise" as more of a "crack" than a "window" about the man, hence my trying to learn more.

After 5 years in office, Harper is much more interested in diverting the public's interest toward "exposing" the so-called "coalition," than running in his record!

Actually, he's been o.k. with ethnicity. Distribution of wealth still needs a lot of work though.

Actually the current distribution of wealth in Canada is a reflection of ethnicity, race and sexism.

Politically, the Conservatives also have the lowest % of female candidates than any other major party.

You just don't realise you belong to an ethnic group because yours is the majority group. Trust me, the moment you move abroad to a foreign country where the culture is quite different, you'll become aware of it very quickly.

We all belong to an ethnic group, though some of us give it more importance. I'm aware of my ethnic influences but just don't give it much importance in politics. Consider that anti-immigrant sentiments often stem from conscious or unconscious ethnic identity.
