Well; if yuh listen to CNN .... Today is "hisoric" and a "great success" for Iraq.

If there was an election in Canada and all the people in Quebec refused to participate, could we as Canadians call the election legit? Could we even imagine any "successful" conclusion to the election?

Well .... the Americans can.
They are selling this war just like those "juicers" on TV. No one likes carrot juice and no one tells you that it will cost you 60 bucks in rasberries just to get a glass of juice.

Is Iraq still in a state of turmoil... yes. Are the Iraqi elections going to be perfect... no. Have the Americans done everything they promised to do after they invaded...no. Is life a bed of roses...no. Lets face it, Iraq hasn't had any kind of even pseudo democratic elections for years and years. I may not have supported the war, and i may have grave reservations about the Americans reasons for going into the country, but i do have to give them some credit. They are still there. If they had gone in, destroyed everything and then moved out leaving only a token force to support some puppet government then i could wholly condemn them. At least they are trying though. It may be for the wrong reasons, (ie. profit for their friends rather then purely for the people of Iraq) but this is at least a step in the right direction.

OK, think of Iraq as the orange...

Yeah I guess crappy elections are better than none - at least it's a start. But I doubt the violence will stop, there are a small minority who just want to murder apostates (ie. Sunnis) and foreigners, after all. I mean, what kind of asshat threatens to kill people who vote? They don't want peace, and as much as I am loath to admit it, that's not really the Americans' fault.

I think a better path could have been followed, but given where they are right now, high voter turnout (as reported) is probably the best thing for Iraqis.

All we know with this election is that the Kurds in the North want to separate and form their own country and that the Shiite in the South want the seat of power in a "New Iraq"

It did not take an election to figure that out.

America has "created" an election for "T.V. Land" because they are very good at manipulating world opinion. But, after 2 years the situation on the ground is much worse under American occupation then with Saddam.

The only election in history where it was necessary to keep the party platform and candidates a secret!

They voted today and still don't have running water and electricity!

The ballot boxes will all be secretly transported to the Green Zone and where they will be counted.

No .... nothing at all was accomplished today.

Today is the beginning of outright civil war within Iraq.
