Murder rate rockets . . . but soon runs out of fuel

Tom Whipple

Civilised: the murder rate in England and Wales is one of the lowest, if not THE lowest, in the world although it's higher in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The town of Henley-on-Thames in Southern England last week had its first murder for over SIXTY years. The only time recently that England's murder rate has increased was in 2002, when it was discovered that Dr Harold Shipman, the world's WORST serial killer, killed 172 people. How ironic that the country with the lowest murder rate also has the world's worst serial killer.

Here is an upsettingly predictable statistic: three years ago authorities in England and Wales recorded more homicides than at any time in the last century; 1,043 deaths in a year — possibly the most since the English Civil War. Murder had rocketed.

So far, so depressingly boring. In crime-wave Britain, rocketing is precisely what murder statistics are supposed to do. This week a 43-year-old man was killed by teenagers in Henley, and investigations continue into a suspected serial killer in Ipswich.

It is a supposed axiom of modern life that the streets are more dangerous, the world more frightening.

Yet the cause of the rise was actually more nuanced than that: 2002 was also the year that the inquiry into the GP Harold Shipman announced its results. In the course of one afternoon 172 murders, most carried out years before, were added to recorded crime.

In the world league table of murder rates, the horrific activities of a single man raised the UK above much of the West. And the next year we dropped right back down. The mundane truth is that, however harrowing the individual atrocities, when it comes to murder Britain is extremely average.

Homicide statistics, which include manslaughter and infanticide, are generally measured in terms of victims per 100,000 people.

The Home Office produced a paper comparing the UK in 2001 with other Western countries. England and Wales, which are measured separately, had a rate of 1.61 and Scotland and Northern Ireland were a bit higher.

In comparison, the EU average was 1.59, Finland endured 2.86 deaths per 100,000 people and the US had a whopping 5.56. Since then the UK’s overall murder rate has actually FALLEN very slightly.

Of course any murders are unacceptable. But it is one of the more bizarre elements of our nation’s psyche that we seem genuinely to want to believe — at least if our press is anything to go by — that Britain is on the verge of apocalypse.

Here are the facts: last year there were 765 recorded homicides in England and Wales — roughly equivalent to the 1998 level — and that included the 52 victims of the July 7 bombing. In the years immediately preceding 1998 the level remained essentially stable.

The overall trend has been for a small, but steady, increase in the murder rate since 1945, although the same is not true if you look back to 1900. But that is rarely the argument being made. Murders, although individually horrific, are still extremely rare.

And as tragic as the Shipman case was, if one man — even one of the world’s most prolific serial killers — can raise the homicide rate by almost 20 per cent, then our social decline is nowhere near as bad as some tabloids would have us believe.

Modern technology might help to end this latest monster as well. The original didn't have to contend with car radios, television, and DNA, for starters.

It was the British who invented DNA testing to capture criminals.

But it'll be hard to DNA test these victims as the killer removed their clothes before dumping them, either to keep them as trophies ar to reduce the chances of the cops finding his DNA.

Stone ... bad taste

Sick joke by movie man Stone

December 14, 2006

HOLLYWOOD director Oliver Stone stunned the British Comedy Awards last night with a sick joke about the Ripper.

The Born On The Fourth Of July director told the audience: “I haven’t been here for years. Jack the Ripper’s back — it’s good to see nothing changes.”

The bad taste jibe was met by shocked silence from the gathered celebrities in London.

I apologise, it's the English in me, yep scarpered generally means to run away very quickly.

But as I see it, this Ipswich ripper fellow wont be anything like people's traditional view of the Whitechapel murderer, for a start, I think he'll sound like a character from "Great expectations". To be honest though, I think, if he had any sense, he'd be out of the country by now....although no doubt interpol are looking for him also.

* Definition scarper
verb UK SLANG
to leave very quickly, often to avoid getting into trouble:
The police are coming! We'd better scarper.

The Suffolk Ripper is WORSE than the Jack the Ripper. In fact, the current rate that this murderer is dispatching his victims is probably unprecedented in British history, according to the Suffolk Constabulary.

Jack the Ripper killed 5 prostitutes between August and November 1888, whereas the Suffolk Ripper has killed five in just 6 days, and there could be more victims.

The most accepted list, referred to as the "canonical five", includes the following five prostitutes (or presumed prostitute in Eddowes' case) in the East End of London:
Police fear that the Suffolk Ripper is what is known as a "spree" killer, which is worse than a "serial" killer. Whereas serial killers kill a certain amount of people and then stop and it could take some time for the police to catch them, spree killers continue killer and never stop until they are caught.

I am AWARE this particularly vulgar fellow is worse than Jack the Ripper, I never implied otherwise....I said he would be nothing like the supposed whitechapel ripper....in that, if he's local, which by all accounts he probably is, he'll sound like a character from Great Expectations....in a framer giles kind of way.

Like J. the R., this guy is attacking probably the most vulnerable people among us who have little recourse but to continue working. If he keeps on killing, he will be caught. The sooner the better.

Strangler police hunt BMW Pole

15th December 2006

Anneli Alderton

A migrant worker from Eastern Europe is being sought by police investigating the Suffolk strangler murders.

The man - who has not been seen since Wednesday - drives a dark blue BMW similar to the one in which victim Anneli Alderton was last seen alive.

He works on a farm close to where more than one of the serial killer's five victims were found.

His BMW has been left parked near his home, and a police forensic team spent yesterday afternoon examining the car for any evidence linking it to the victims.

Police believe the man may have vital information which could help them with the inquiry.

As well as the link between a BMW driver and Anneli, there were also reports last night that victim Annette Nicholls was seen getting into a BMW at around the time she disappeared.

The fresh twist came as police confirmed that one of two bodies discovered on Tuesday is that of missing prostitute Paula Clennell, 24. A post-mortem examination confirmed that she had been strangled.

There was also speculation yesterday that the killer may have plied his victims with drugs to subdue them before throttling them. All of the girls were drug addicts, and none of them appeared to have put up a fight as they were murdered.

Last night Ipswich town centre was enclosed by a "ring of steel" with specialist police surveillance vans stationed on every road going into the town which can record every car going in and out of the centre.

Suffolk police said they were keen to eliminate the migrant worker from their inquiry after a member of the public reported seeing the BMW parked on a dirt track outside Ipswich.

The spot is just a short drive from where Paula Clennell, Anneli Alderton, 24, and Annette Nicholls, 29, were found dead earlier this week.

The stream where victims Gemma Adams, 25, and Tania Nicol, 19, were found is within 15 minutes by car.

The witness who reported the car to police, who spoke to the Daily Mail on condition of anonymity, said: "I noticed the BMW parked on a dirt track and because it matched the description of the car the police were looking for and because it was so close to where the bodies were found, I tried to find out who it belonged to.

"I spoke to someone who knows the owner of the car and he isn't around at the moment.

"I phoned the police and a forensic team was sent down to examine the car. It might just be a coincidence but it was too obvious to ignore."

Last night the BMW was no longer parked on the track and there was no-one at the man's home, where the lights had been left on all day.

The driver is understood to be one of thousands of migrant workers who arrive in Suffolk every year via the nearby port of Felixstowe to take up seasonal jobs in agriculture.

A Suffolk Police spokesman said: "This is a line of inquiry our officers are following up. It is one of many lines of inquiry which is being looked at."

Anneli, 24, was seen in the middle of last week getting into a dark blue BMW with a "chubby" kerb crawler, thought to be the last time she was seen alive.

Annette Nicholls went missing on December 3 or 4, and a witness has contacted police to say she was seen getting into a BMW about two weeks ago.

It also emerged yesterday that a man driving a similar car was seen acting "suspiciously" outside a massage parlour last week.

A security guard was so concerned about the driver's odd behaviour that he noted down the car's numberplate - providing a potentially vital clue.

The driver was seen "peering intently" into the Aquarius salon in Ipswich, moving his car backwards and forwards to get a better view, less than 48 hours before Anneli was found strangled.

When the security man went to investigate, he sped away.

The sighting of the BMW outside Aquarius happened either last Tuesday or Wednesday.

Anneli's naked body was seen dumped by a roadside near Nacton, Suffolk, on Thursday last week, though it was mistaken for a mannequin at the time and police were not alerted until Sunday.

A security guard called Mark, who works part-time at Aquarius, said: "The driver of this car was behaving very strangely in our car park at the back of the premises.

"First he repeatedly reversed backwards and forwards outside our door, then he parked up on the far side of the car park and was reversing backwards and forwards again. He was revving his engine and then stopping.

"It appeared like he was trying to adjust the position of his car so he could get the best view up to the window of our first floor premises.

"At one stage he put on his interior light as he was peering intently at the window."

Mark said he went outside and got into his own car, shining his headlights on the BMW, which sped off.

Mark, 43, said the car was "quite a dark blue BMW" with brightly-coloured gold alloy wheels. He recorded the registration on his mobile phone and has passed the information on to police.

Last night police renewed appeals for members of the public to be on the lookout for the victims' clothing, which may have been dumped by the killer.

All five victims had been stripped naked, almost certainly to remove any forensic evidence the killer might have left on their clothes.

Last night police sources said they were still seeking the driver of the BMW who picked up Anneli.

A post mortem examination found that Paula had died from "compression of the neck."

More than 5,000 calls have now been received by the incident room along with more than 1,000 e-mails.

They are being analysed by more than 300 police officers and staff from eight forces.

Records of the mobile phones used by the five murdered prostitutes may also have plotted a silent trail to help police trap her killer.

Detectives are studying computer data of each handset's last signals to discover where they went and create a crucial timeline to piece together their last movements.

The trail comes from a series of silent transmissions that every mobile phone sends out.

Each signal creates a timed computer log of the handset's movements, which can be plotted on a map using information from phone mast locations.

The same technology was used to expose Soham killer Ian Huntley as a liar - and to confirm that the signal from murdered schoolgirl Jessica Chapman's phone died at Huntley's home shortly after she and her friend Holly Wells walked into his clutches.
Meanwhile charities have started paying prostitutes in Ipswich to stay off the streets while the killer is at large.

Mum-to-be ... tragic Anneli

EXCLUSIVE

Baby is killer's 6th victim

By JOHN TROUP
December 16, 2006

ONE of the Suffolk Strangler’s victims was PREGNANT, The Sun can reveal.

Vice girl Anneli Alderton, 24, was around three months into her pregnancy, cops confirmed last night.

The news of a sixth life being claimed emerged as police said they had the killer in their sights — after narrowing the hunt to just a handful of men.

Police found out about Anneli’s condition following a post mortem. A police spokesman said last night: “We can confirm that Anneli Alderton was around three months pregnant. “The information was not made public as soon as we became aware because it was not deemed relevant.”

The post mortem also revealed that Anneli died from asphyxiation.

Her naked body was spotted in woodland at Nacton, to the south of Ipswich, by a passing motorist on Sunday.

Her family yesterday said they were stunned by news of the pregnancy. Mum Marie, 49, was said to have “howled with pain” when cops told her.

And Anneli’s grandmother Joan Molloy, 84, collapsed.

They believe the vice girl was planning on breaking the news to them in a few days.

A close family friend said: “We had no idea Anneli was pregnant, none at all.

“Words can’t describe how much more pain the news has caused.

“We thought what in the world can be worse than the murder.

“But this makes it much worse. Marie howled with pain when she heard.

“That bastard has now taken two lives from this family.”

COPS breathed a sigh of relief last night after a former Ipswich prostitute, feared to have become another victim, was found safe and well.
